As Joe has said there is a tiny bit more space in the Disco's, though i think this is mainly due to the shape being more boxier.
I'd still reccomend that some kind of ply lining was installed for the base, sides and certainly some kind of dog guard type affair for behind the front seats for heavy kit. Some recessed tie down hooks and bungies would be good to help stop kit moving around under partial loading unless its all packed in tight
Speaking from both sides of driving a Disco 4 HSE long term (over 3 months and 9k miles) and a FFRR (2005 facelift vintage) and i've put 7k on this so far and for loading kit in the Disco wins but for sheer comfort when piling miles on the FFRR wins.
Now if you got a cheap box trailer and had a TDV8 or SC then the FFRR would be the choice to go for.
The other problem is the numerous reliability issues with the Disco 3's, the main reason why i looked into FFRR's Disco 3's also come as commericals which FFRR wont do..
If you can i'd stretch for a D4 HSE/XS spec if you can as an FFRR shouldn't really be subjected to hauling kit internally. the interior won't appreciate it without good protection
Also in your market you may still be able to get a petrol version and then convert it to LPG to help reduce fuel costs as well.
The disco's cost a bit more for servicing, specially when its cambelt time(the FFRR TDV8 3.6 doesnt have one!)
Test drive both in the spec you want is all i can advise as the main starting point to see what you think.
How big is the ladder as it may require a roof rack to be fitted??
