How Nickable Is A FFRR?

I know the standard FF is insurance group 16E (E denoting extra level of security than normal) but how nickable is a FFRR? The SC is group 18 but I assume it has the same security features as the 4.4 but is a higher grouping as is more desirable to thieves?

Statistics state most modern cars are stolen with the keys as alot of people are not very careful where they keep them and I fully intend to be very careful when I get one but has anybody ever had one stolen without the keys - is this even possible?

Also how accessible is the catalytic converter? .... A few years ago we had a knock at the door from the local CSO warning us that thieves were stealing them from cars, presumably for scrap value and were targeting 4x4's specifically for ease of access.

Lastly are trackers really worth it? .... I live in a city with a very high east European population and I cant help thinking if it ever does get nicked it will be out of the country within hours.

If you have a newer petrol one, i'd say 0-2yr old then i'd invest in a tracker as they are the ones most likely to be nicked for export markets....

The diesels however would likely only be stolen to be cloned or sold in a country where petrol isn't always wanted.

They aren't very easy to steal without the keys, either dragged onto a flat bed or hoisted...

The insurance group mainly relates to the value of the parts to repair and the risk of damage to other vehicles hit by it Very Happy

Looking at an 06MY SC (first choice) or 4.4(second choice) by the way

Exactly, er, well not quite. Rolling with laughter But I have seen 1st hand how easy it is to override the need for a key. Obviously not something which I would publish in open forum but I bet the info is out there somewhere anyway. I suppose the more pertinent question would be "Why bother?" Get the keys to your intended target.

If we're talking about an opportunist theft then the FFRR is probably not easy, but then, neither are most modern cars. It's just that the RR is probably going to be stolen to order by professionals, not just pinched by the local scally for a bit of fun.

Anyone in I.T. will remember the issue with a certain Security ID company a while back. Their master encryption keys database was hacked which effectively meant the token tags were then entirely reliant upon the user's PIN number. And therein lies the problem with any kind of security. SOMEONE has to be the keeper of the key so to speak, and if that master key is not stored securely (human error or deliberate) then the whole shooting match is thus compromised.

Besides, do we really believe that organised criminal gangs don't have access to the main keys database at every car manufacturer in the world? Like I said before, hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Like i said, I reckon the big risk ones are new SC's and ones upto about 3yr old.

If its Diesel the re-sale on the nicked market is probably not much due to demand outside the UK in countries where its easy to export dodgey motors to...

My biggest fear is someone sticking a knife of gun in my wifes face for the keys to our SC... I know that all sounds far fetched but its happened before to others... Is a car really worth it? But then as with everything in life, if you own something nice, some Censored Censored Censored will always want to nick/ruin it...

Craig Thumbs Up
