Cylinder head bolt tool 303-1653 for Petrol V8

I am stripping my engine down to ascertain the reason for low compression on a cylinder. I have got to the point of removing the cylinder head only to find the cylinder head bolts require a special tool, namely 303-1653. The bolt head looks like a RIBE profile, but an M11 RIBE looks to fit, but is too slack, whereas an M12 RIBE is too big. There is a sleeve tool, 303-1492, which compliments the 303-1653 and is to protect the cylinder head. The head bolts are located under the camshaft bearings.

It appears no-one in the UK sells the 303-1653 tool whereas there are sellers in the US where I suppose this engine is more popular.

The only UK source I have found is https://jlrequipment.service-solutions.com and I understand this is where the the UK dealers go. I am in the process of ordering through this website but because their warehouse is in Germany there are some 'no VAT ID' admin I am having to address in setting up my account. I haven't yet paid and I suspect this will take 2 weeks or more to arrive.

Does anyone have this tool they can lend/rent/sell to me so, at least, I can get the head off to see what the issue is? 2010 5.0 SC Autobiography Overfinch in Bentley Silk White pearlescent, 22" Overfinch wheels with 285/35x22 tyres

The bosch warehouse is in Germany but the goods are invoiced from Bosch Automotive in Manchester and they request payment to their UK bank account. I've used them frequently over the years with no problem, but I will admit the initial account setup was slow. L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.

I bought tools from Bosch when I was doing the chains on my 5.0 too.

Other then the initial set up being slow, the dispatch and delivery of the tools was very quick.

Keep chasing them for your account and you'll get there. Thumbs Up

Regarding the initial account set up, can you guys define slow? By slow, do you mean a few days or a few weeks? 2010 5.0 SC Autobiography Overfinch in Bentley Silk White pearlescent, 22" Overfinch wheels with 285/35x22 tyres

The tool number above cross references to the 5.0 V8 and his signature says it's a 5.0 V8 Range Rover he's got so I've put 2 and 2 together to make 4 I hope! Smile 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

It's possible but could be a bmw m62 engine which didn't require any specials tools when we did mine

The 4.2 SC in my old car didn't either. It was just a decent Torx T60 required to undo the head bolts. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I am still waiting for my account to be set up. Most probably next week. They said 5 working days.

However, I chanced with a TorxT60, and although the head bolt is clearly a RIBE with the squared ended spokes, there was enough engagement with a T60 to undo the head bolts. However, I would prefer the official tool when reinstalling.

And to finish this episode off, I could not see anything wrong with the head or head gasket to indicate a breakdown from the cylinder to the large void where the timing chain resides. The head is currently at a local machine shop to be tested.

In the meantime I prepared a piece of ceramic tile with a hole drilled in the middle. I set my compressor to 20psi, greased the top ring of a good cylinder, placed the tile over it and used the hole to pressurise the cylinder. The tile would pop up to release the pressure. Do the same on the bad cylinder and the tile would not pop up, with the pressure bypassing the cylinder. I clearly have a piston fault.

The next episode is engine out and bottom end strip down. FFS. 2010 5.0 SC Autobiography Overfinch in Bentley Silk White pearlescent, 22" Overfinch wheels with 285/35x22 tyres

I have just received my order. This has taken 1 month in total. 3 weeks to set up the account, with another week to ship.

At least my account is set up now. 2010 5.0 SC Autobiography Overfinch in Bentley Silk White pearlescent, 22" Overfinch wheels with 285/35x22 tyres
