Really interesting, and in fact has likely changed my viewpoint on hydrogen. I was one who thought hydrogen would be the way forward long term.

Interesting about the boilers too. My boiler is old and as much as I can repair it, I do wonder about what its replacement would be, including the notion of hydrogen capable boilers ... but he's just completely quashed that. V8 or else ...

I did think there was a place for Hydrogen but explained, it really isnt viable due to the difficulty in getting it, storing it and transporting it. There are a few other podcasts from the professor on youtube and he really does explain things really well leading you through his thought process to his conclusions. Very interesting guy. for me they are all dirty when you look at the overall picture!
i think when you really drill down from manufacture to adding fuel.

people are hiding the truth about just how filthy Lithium batteries actually are from the child labor (In certain places) used to mine the raw materials to actually disposing them at the end of life.

I still do not understand why LPG was abandoned? perhaps someone can educate me?

what i do know is this

1) Fossil Fuel companies will hide the truth to hang onto profits
2) governments will accept the lies so they can tax what ever fuel you run on
3) car MFR's will tell us anything to get us to buy there cars this includes hiding the truth (Think VW)
4) We will always love the freedom of our own transport and in most cases accept the above 3 items never looking too hard!

Personally by the end of 2024 i will have enough solar panels + battery storage to power my home without need for the grid. with the exception of Nov, Dec, Jan & feb. i will need to dip into the grid then possibly.

BUT if too many of us achieve this the government will find a way to tax us or ban it. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

I think it was a combination of things:

- Availability it just never took off round my way, so likely same in other areas. The nearest for me was 18 miles away from the house, which on a sub mile 200 made for a lot of travel just to fill up.

- Battery hybrids and battery cars were appearing and more on the horizon.

- Not really worth it in smaller cars which for the most part form the bulk of motoring. Small modern petrols can do 50+ mpg so all that additional effort isn't really gaining you much.

- Engine complexity / turbos / superchargers direct injection etc ... engine fuel injection has just become so complex to manage the ever increasing emissions, and the generic LPG systems never really kept up. Take range rovers for example ... the petrols all ended up being supercharged, and to fit LPG to supercharged was not easy... I'm not even sure if I've seen or read of an LPG L405 Range Rover.

- Engine suitability - the BMW engines had hardened valve seats which could deal with LPT better than the Jag derived engines ... so you needed additional kit to counter the effect of LPG on the valve seats on the latter RR's. I imagine other engine makers were similar.

- Cost ... towards the end of having the last LPG car I had ( a 2002 4.4 ), I found that the cost of LPG crept up markedly. Where as it used to be a lot less than half the price of petrol, even a third at one point, it went to above two thirds the price. At that point, given that LPG was not as fuel efficient, the savings made from running LPG to pay back the cost of install faded a lot. I probably did pay back the install price from running the car on LPG, but I wouldn't have said that I saved much beyond that due to the increase in price.

Just basically not worth it. Probably in a similar way that hydrogen is looking to turn out to not be worth it for the hassle either. V8 or else ...

It still doesnt address the cost issue of the Hydrogen along with all of the other issues storage/logistics/inefficiency etc. BMW i3 Electric Car
