Had a long journey at the weekend - half mile before home the message "gearbox overheating" came on the dashboard.
since I was only half mile, I carried on. when I got out of the car there was a very acrid smell - no signs of oil leaking our nor anything melting.

Anyways - quick research suggests that the lower part of the cooler which is used to cool transmission oil often becomes blocked and needs replacing along with new transmission oil/filter.

Clearly as the car has cooled overnight the message has now gone away.

Now I already have car booked in this week for another issue. Question is - Do I risk driving it to the dealership (about 12 miles) or do I get LR assist to come and tow it there? (don't worry I'm not gonna hold anyone accountable!! )

The problem is , your oil has allready overheated and will have lost some of its properties .
It may not harm the box , it may harm the box .
If you can get them to collect for free , that would be a no brainier for me .

Well decided to get LR assist out.

He said that my car was showing fault code P2787-4B is recorded.

Something to do with clutch temperature exceeding limit. Wow - I didn't know automatic boxes had a clutch - I though it was a viscous coupling ?

He has recommended the gear oil be drained and the system flushed.

Well, LR have now had a look and as per usual tell me work needs doing but the LR extended warranty doesn't cover it.
Consequently they want over £800 to flush/replace the transmission oil and replace the filter!!!!! they haven't said what caused the overheating just that the oil and filter will now need replacement.

Now my car is 4 year old and according to the service schedule the gear oil/filter are only replaced every 9 years.

The basis of their refusal to pay is "it's a service item". My defence I guess will be .... "That's suppose to last 9 years (give or take)....not just 4 years!!!

Every piggin time I've tried to claim on the LR warranty they have argued not to pay! Worthless.

Don't even get me started on intermittent faults and their disinclination to find them.

I'm in Cheshire and used a company in Hawarden who did a full flush and filter change on my L322 - Chester Automatic Transmission Co,. Can''t remember how much it was but certainly cheaper than a main dealer.

£800 is right around where I was quoted from a dealer .

I think in the end I got a kit from Atlantic British that included the sump/filter and 6 liters of zf , at around $300
And the local transmission shop installed for $200 .
I then used some ebay bucks to buy another 9 or 10 liters of zf for about $200 and the tranny shop charged about $50 each time I had it drained and filled .

A full flush using zf is around $800 at the dealer , and the same with royal purple around $200 at the Indy .

^the ZF fluid is specific to the gearbox and is expensive. Royal Purple ATF isn't the correct spec for the 8 sp ZF box, or the 6 Sp box either as far as i can tell, these need to have Lifeguard 6 or 8 respectively and i don't think that it comes up to the correct spec for the box.

There are some alternatives but not many. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I think that’s the first time I’ve seen a problem posted regarding the 8HP70 transmission. How do they reckon that replacing the filter and fluid is going to cure a clutch overheating problem? (Your transmission has 5 clutches, by the way – not including the torque converter lock-up clutch). Surely the extended warranty covers an internal fault with the transmission?

I have asked the direct question "What has caused the overheat?" -
The technician has told to the service desk person that "it will be the clogged filter" - hence lubrication is not circulating properly hence the over heating of the "clutch".

To me - all LR have done is propose a cure for the symptoms and not the disease. i.e. - sure the filter "may" be clogged but why? - At only 4 years into a 9 year service item I can't accept that it is just "normal" wear and tear hence not covered on warranty. - which is what they are claiming.

The dealership have said they will go back to LR warranty dept and see if they are prepared to make a contribution towards it - but I am still miffed. In my mind I should be paying nothing to this problem and I still want to know what caused the problem.

(also anyone know how many litres of this ZF lifeguard 8 would be needed to flush and refill my box? - thanks)

Well , I would want to look at the filter once it's changed and analyze the oil when that's flushed .

Of course I could be cynical and say actually fixing the problem would be on their dime ....

The only way the filter could become clogged is if something in the transmission was generating debris – in which case there’s an internal fault with the transmission. Land Rover technicians don’t have a clue about the operation of the transmission as they’re only trained to replace them and not fix them. You might be better off speaking directly to ZF at Nottingham – I’m sure they would be mortified to hear that one of their flagship transmissions has failed after only 4 years.

Transmission fluid capacity is 8.5 litres so a drain and refill will need less than this (sorry I don’t know the actual amount).

I agree with Phil, there has to be something which has caused the overheat, not just a clogged filter, something has to have worn in the box to cause the debris to clog the filter in the first place

Out of interest how many miles has it done?

ZF may be able to help but they may be more interested in what has gone wrong. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
