This might be the wrong place to ask this question, but ...

Given a decently shod FFRR driving to the Alps, I can see the need for some snow chains when up in the hills (and have had occasion to use mine) - but snowsocks - why ?

It's a valid question:

it's twofold:

1. It's a legal requirement to have snow chains or snowsocks in the car (I usually borrow a set of chains from NKSC but he is coming with me so we need a set each)
2. Chains are heavy, twice the price and can damage the alloys, and they are hard to find ones that fit the 20" tyres, and when you do, they are super expensive. Discovery 4 HSE

Snow socks are great things but I'd reccomend taking them off as soon as your unstuck and safe to do, otherwise it's extra wear on the materials  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Chains - fair enough if the police are pulling cars over because of the depth of new snow (because otherwise you might block the road on the hairpins up to the resort etc) - but I wasn't aware that they considered snowsocks a reasonable alternative.

I use chains on my 20" wheels (which did take a while to source) - I'll dig out the make for you.

Thats kind of you but I can guarantee they will cost me close to £130+ and I'm not paying that for something I'm 99% unlikely to use! Discovery 4 HSE
