a lot of the modern navs are custom written firmware running on customised hardware which is probably proprietary to the manufacturer of the unit. i.e. the info on a) what software to use to write programs for it, and b) how to acutally update the firmware are not public knowledge or a simple download from google. You would need to strip it and see what the chip is inside.

Compared to phones, its not like adding an image into its storage and saying use it. Its more like re-writing the operating system of the phone with the boot image built in, and then flashing the upgrade onto the chip.

I think the early nav units often used DVD display technology ( the system that shows the menus on a DVD player ) as their software. I imagine that the modern ones are still in that sort of theme, but much more advanced than the earlier ones. They used them as they had the quick startup times ( sub 10 seconds stuff ) compared to full PC's or computers. ( 30+ second boot times ) V8 or else ...

If it was easy I reckon:

a) Powerful UK would offer a DIY 'kit'
b) Khan/Overfinch etc would have already edited it for their conversions.
