Goosed Battery

The TDV8 has been sounding a bit sluggish when starting recently, tonight its just stopped working altogether!

There's also a rev-related hoover type noise, not sure if its related. It needs a service (and a new battery) so its going to be an expensive christmas!

At least I get to try out my boost starter tomorrow Very Happy Discovery 4 HSE

The noise could be a sticking viscous fan. Mine does it, but usually in the warmer weather, although I don't suppose they are limited to that. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

I got that type of noise immediately before my alternator failed. I think it must be due to low voltage??

Interesting comment re the alternator, that might all add up too as too why I am having battery issues.

I'll replace the battery anyway, as its now over 4yrs old and been drained a number of times, I can't trust it any longer.

The car is going in today for the service, battery and now potentially an alternator. This will be expensive! Discovery 4 HSE

Not sure if it was the alternator that was making the noise, but noticed the sounds you mentioned as I drove it back from the post office, 15 minutes later the alarm went off on the driveway and I had about 4 volts showing on the battery. Possibly it is other systems making the noise?

Alternator should be kicking out over 14 volts if it is working correctly, less than that and you have yourself an expensive electrical issue Big Cry

When mine was started back up by the nice LR assistance chap, the alternator was actively discharging the battery Shocked

Hopefully you won't have such an expensive day Thumbs Up

Well, the Machine Mart Jump Start 4000 didn't work. Evil or Very Mad

You have to leave it connected for about 5-10 mins to get power into the car, it did crank but not long enough to fire her up.

It's not helped by the fact that on the TDV8 they didn't put a remote battery positive terminal in the engine bay and its really fiddly to get a good connection on the positive battery terminal. Stupid backwards design flaw.

weak battery + 8 glow plugs + god knows how many ECU's = no chance of starting up

LR assistance used 2 booster packs plus had jump leads from their car to mine for 15 minutes before there was sufficient charge to start the engine...

AA man linked up his jump leads and a booster pack, we got it going, but it died again. once it was running again he linked his machine and it was showing a fluctuating charge rate below 14 amps. It almost resulted in a recovery truck coming out.

I managed to get it to the dealer and they have it now. Apparently Land Rover have an SRO of 4 hrs for replacing an alternator. Great! Discovery 4 HSE

I believe that replacing the alternator on a TDV8 is a pain in the a Censored s, because of the packaging in the engine bay I think they need to remove the radiators for access etc.

I didn't worry about it as mine was under warranty.

If they do have to remove the radiator then you should have some nice new coolant/antifreeze ready for winter... every cloud, silver linings and all that... Rolling Eyes

Easy come easy go.

I didn't take up the LR warranty at £1500 a year on the basis such a rainy day may arrive. Discovery 4 HSE

Just had the dreaded call from the Dealer but its not so bad. Very Happy

Luckily the alternator is ok, but the battery is most definitely goosed, they couldnt move it in the service yard, now a new one is fitted its running, starting and charging fine.

The only addition is front and rear pads. I must be getting old, 'cos I can't be bothered to shop around and the hassle and time it takes to go elsehwere, while they have the car they may as well do them. (lazy Censored )

They did give me the choice of OE LR pads and a cheaper but 'as good quality' alternative. It would have saved me about £20 a corner so I couldnt see the point and went for the Brembo stuff.

I quite like stopping Whistle Discovery 4 HSE
