I got that type of noise immediately before my alternator failed. I think it must be due to low voltage??

Not sure if it was the alternator that was making the noise, but noticed the sounds you mentioned as I drove it back from the post office, 15 minutes later the alarm went off on the driveway and I had about 4 volts showing on the battery. Possibly it is other systems making the noise?

AA man linked up his jump leads and a booster pack, we got it going, but it died again. once it was running again he linked his machine and it was showing a fluctuating charge rate below 14 amps. It almost resulted in a recovery truck coming out.

I believe that replacing the alternator on a TDV8 is a pain in the a s, because of the packaging in the engine bay I think they need to remove the radiators for access etc.
