New Range Rover to feature ground breaking off-road technolo

New off-road tech for next Range Rover

    - Terrain-i system on new Range Rover
    - Selects which off-road mode car should be in
    - Tech could trickle down to other models

The next Range Rover will have ground-breaking off-road technology when it launches at the end of 2012.

Called Terrain-i, the tech is a more sophisticated version of the company's Terrain Response system, which is fitted to all models. The new version uses a suite of electronic aids, so that drivers don't need to select which type of electronic off-road assistance is needed – the car 'looks ahead' at the terrain and does it for you.

Also on the new Range Rover will be a Wade Aid device, which uses sonar to measure water depth ahead to ensure that it is safe to traverse. It will also, if required, pre-select the correct speed and gear required to go through the water.

The Terrain-i system also uses cameras to look ahead and assess topography of the environment you are driving in. It decides whether the car is capable of negotiating the terrain and if not, the sat-nav reroutes you.

In time, this technology, or parts of it, will trickle down to other Land Rover models. However, the next all-new Range Rover is likely to have other technologies designed to improve its on-road performance.

Insiders claim it will be around 500kg lighter than the current model, mainly due to its aluminium construction and other weight-saving technologies. It will also be correspondingly superior to drive, and use less fuel than the current car.

I'd wish they'd bring out sat nav maps for all the places the FFRRs are supposedly designed for, like AFRICA !!!

I have to resort to a bloody suction mount Tom Tom with West African maps because LR can not provide maps for any other place that South Africa ;( AAAARGH......... MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

And it is not like the maps themselves are not available, all navigation systems use the maps from the same two suppliers. I'd wish that LR started to realize that it is not all the rich and famous (and notorious) that drive their products, also nutcases like us that live in remote parts of the world for which the LRs/RRs were designed in the first place. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Yes, hard to understand, Navigon and iGO are ok, TomTom is a mess too, though... Funny thing, a friend got the new Audi Allroad and he couldn't find the map for Romania in the list, it just got Portugal and then Spain, no R in there... And he paid much $$$$ for the nav system!

Guys, sorry for hijacking this thread. Let us hope that LR are browsing through here as well and that pretty soon we see a host of new DVDs come out that can take us to any part of the globe (including the North Pole, Top Gear style). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I heard they're researching tyres with retractable spikes.

That would make it the bankrobber vehicle of choice then. If the spikes can come from inside out then putting tyre puncturing mats or chains on the road are useless Smile I would like to see the look on a policemans face when the car just runs across it (mat/chain not the policeman of course) with its own spikes sticking out Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
