Is this a sign of impending doom..

For the last week first thing on a morning the RR starts straight up as usual, into gear fine with no hesitation - all nice and smooth. Then I drive down the road for about quarter of a mile slightly downhill, changes up fine - but then come to 'T' junction and the gearbox does a noticeable CLUNK down into low gear, rather than a nice smooth change..

Rest of the day, even after stop and re start all is smooth with no problems at all

Is this the beginning of the end

this is fairly common and i get it now and again...mines a 2005 as well ... ... - .- -.

Mine recently failed and didnt have that symptom.
my symptoms were:
1. Hesitation selecting gear at low throttle openings, worst cruising at about 45 mph, but also when coasting slowly. (12 months prior to failure)
2. Slow to pick up drive from first start/cold, to the point of rolling backwards. (about 2 weeks prior to failure)
When it finally went: loss of drive, extreme clutch slipping and managed to limp home.
Didnt experience any clunking so you may be ok 2003 Vogue TD6 - Adriatic Blue - 2010 Facelift & 2010 20" wheels
1996 90 Tdi soft top gone
2003 HSE TD6 gone
2005 RRS TDV6 HSE gone
2007 Vogue SE TDV8 gone

I wondered if you were getting full engine braking in gears 3, 2 & 1?

Clutch pressures during overrun /rollout shifts for gears 3, 2 & 1 (i.e. for the low/reverse clutch, the 2nd coast clutch and the overdrive clutch) are modulated by the low pressure control valve.

Would this only show when oil was cold? i.e only on first downchange of the day.

Can anything be done about it, or is it just wait until it gets worse - then new box

What mileages do you guys have on your transmissions?

In my view, the golden rule with an L322 GM 5L40-E transmission is frequent fluid & filter changes (using only Texaco Texamatic 7045E and a genuine Filtran filter) to minimise - but unfortunately not totally prevent - valve block wear.

The renewed fluid viscosity resulting from a fluid change could buy you some more time if the wear process was already well underway. Sonnax supply kits for the 5L40-E to refurbish worn spools/bores in the block, for example for the low pressure control valve :

It could be 3-2, as it's just when slowing down for first junction of the day (rest of the day it's fine)

Does that make a big difference in the diagnosis ?

Mine does this too, it's also a 2005. So far as I'm aware it's a software fault, and can be fixed with a re-flash of the gearbox ecu which costs around £100 or so.

It's a known problem, even when journalists were test driving the '06 model they commented on it, and to be honest it's a disgrace that LR don't just offer a free rectification to afflicted cars.

I got it fixed on my previous car but haven't bothered so far on the new one. Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Can I just check that we're talking about the same transmission?

The ZF 6HP26 unit ('06MY onwards - petrol and '07MY onwards - diesel) certainly had a problem with 2-1 rollout shifts which could be rectified by reflashing the ECU firmware.

I believe we're discussing the 5-speed GM 5L40-E unit used in the TD6.

@phil, i had a recon box at 116k and now its 126k and i've noticed that the little lights on the console [by gear lever] sometimes dont light when in that gear especially the 'd' one.. ... - .- -.

So what's "frequent" for frequent oil and filter changes? .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

If it were mine, I'd drain & refill every 20k miles (which will replace about half of the fluid) and replace the filter every 40k miles. I emphasize that this is just my personal opinion.
