Advice on changing the airbag badge please?

Hi all

I just bought the black supercharged steering wheel airbag badge off eBay to change from my green one, the black one has the locating lugs cut off and will need to be stuck in place but whats the best tools to slowly prize the green one off and are there any tips for causing less damage?.

Thanks

Carl

I am not sure what tool to use but it may be a good idea to disconnect the battery when you change it. Just to be on the safe side. You don't want the airbag going off.

Can you PM a link to where you bought it from as I would like to do the same. Thumbs Up

Thanks

If the green badge is glued on try heating it with a hairdryer to soften the glue

I believe the original one is located with fixing tabs which tuck in and when i pry the badge off some damage will occur to the recess so i have to be careful. The badge isnt connected to anything electrical so shouldnt go off, i hope Whistle

I got mine of eBay just search for range rover airbag badge, they are about £10 + post

I did mine with a big screwdriver.

I also cut the lugs off the new one and glued it on.

I didn't feel in any danger of the airbag going off - but better to disconnect the battery or fuse I suppose.

Alistair, when the original badge comes off is it still the surface of the airbag underneath or are the internals visible?. I dont want to mess with the airbag by disconnecting the battery / pulling the fuse in fear of activating the warning light

No internals visible - its a continuous pice of trim with a couple of small holes in it where the badge tabs have been punchd through. What's bebind the badge looks just like the rest of the steering wheel.

You do need to be careful getting the first tab out though - it feels like you could make a bigger hole if you just yank it, but pulled carefully it will be OK Thumbs Up

I dunno. I don't consider myself a safety nazi, but this is one thing I'm not sure I'd do.

I can't imagine that there'd be any danger of the airbag going off in prying the old badge off and replacing it. All the electrics are well away from the badge and if worst came to worst and you used a drill or chainsaw to remove the badge you'd just be damaging the cloth of the bag itself - which would then not function properly in an accident.

But... The airbag is inflated by an explosive charge and inflates in milliseconds. The cover of the steering wheel pad is blown apart with considerable force and splits into 4 flaps at precut lines. Even a small, light aluminum badge can become quite a projectile when subjected to such forces. I assume that's why the badge is originally affixed with tabs bent over behind the cover to lock it in place - not simply glued.

I don't fancy the idea of having a black Land Rover badge in place of my left eyeball after a minor accident. Especially as people would know I'm completely out-dated once the steering wheel badges go to Range Rover in keeping with the new brand separation...

I did mine today without disconnecting the airbag, it was fine but with a few comments :-

Be careful not to mark the surface of the airbag with the screwdriver, it is very easy to.

Use adhesive tape around 2mm thick, glue won't work because the badge doesn't come into contact with thee raised area underneath, I tried glue first without knowing this and the badge feel off straight away.

I have to say it does look nice but I'm now worried it might fall off.

I used blutack on ours...

It filled the gap behind nicely and it feels securely fixed. It has been on for over a year now and hasn't fallen off at all, even with the removal of the airbag a couple of times. 06MY 4.4 V8 Autobiography Cairns Blue with Navy & Parchment Interior
