Wheels cleaned but lots of oil..?

Hi Folks

I decided to remove my front wheels today and give them a good clean off of brake dust and a re wax ready for winter as I noticed they were quite mucky inside during last car clean only to find the near side wheel was caked in oil inside.

It all cleaned off fine and now gleaming but had a look ins the wheel well (behind the disk) to see a small jubilee clip was loose and oil was coming from the area. Looks like some sort of rubber gaiter that was not sealed (as sealed as jubilee clips go).

Can any one shed any light on what this is and where the oil is from. Should I be worried that a lot of it seems to have escaped and if so, how do I go about replenishing said oil.?

It will be the driveshaft gaiter that is leaking. It will require either a new clip or possibly a new gaiter depending whether the old one is split or not. It is also an MOT failure

Thanks Mate.

Nothing looked split just a loose clip. I tightened it up completely and cleaned the area so I'll see if it still leaks. Do I need to top any oil up anywhere and if so, how would one do that.?

Depends how much grease you lost as to whether it will require a top up.

When you say you tightened the clip, was it a Jubilee clip as in the picture below?



If so that is wrong and will foul the hub carrier

It should be a stainless steel band similar to below




Special CV grease is available to replenish the joint

It's deffo a jubliee as per your first pick. It is not however on that multi layered rubber pic - There is nothing on that. It is inboard more (towards the center of the car) on another rubber gator..??!!??

No. Either end of the gator need to be sealed by the bands/clip. Inside the gator is a CV joint and the gator holds the grease to keep it lubed. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Each driveshaft (one on each wheel so 4 in total) should have 2 rubber boots and 2 steel band clips per boot

Just been out to have another look and it does'nt look like it has the steel ring on the smaller end. It does on the wider end but also has oil/grease around it. Looks like I may need a new one. Is it a big job do you know and something I could do or best going to see my indy..?

The small end can be done with a jubilee clip as it won't foul anything but the big end needs a proper steel band, and no......a cable tie doesn't work.

If the boot is not split take it to your indie who should have the correct part to repair it. Half an hours work when you know what you're doing.

If the boot is split then leave it to the experts

If it's a jubilee clip it's not origonal but where it's located I can't see why a jubilee clip couldn't be used.
I would be more worried about the grease that has apparently leaked out of the CV joint. It's there to provide lubrication and to keep water and dirt away from the CV joint itself. I would be looking to get a sachet of cv joint grease and refilling the rubber gaiter and then refitting the clip.
Just to check the "oil" is grease is it, it's not brake fluid by any chance?
