It's same day at a DVLA office if your plate is on retention, AND you don't want to retain the plate that's already on the target car, AND the dealer is processing fewer than 6. My experience with local DVLA offices is that it depends which way the wind is blowing or which side of the bed they got up from But the general rule is that if the plate is on a retention certificate then yes they will transfer it while you wait but if the plate is already on a vehicle then they normally want a few days to process the transfer in order to carry out "back ground" checks on the donor vehicle.

I went to my local DVLA office today to put my private plate (thats on my RR that is just to be sold), on retention. I filled in one form, attached a cheque for £109, the V5 and MOT cert and handed it over. Within 7 to 10 days I will receive in the post a new V5 and MOT Cert with the original reg number of the car on it. Also a retention certificate (and new tax disc) with my private plate number on it.

It used to be that my local DVLA office would do it while you wait, but last time I went they said it didn't work like that anymore - they took the forms and the paperwork came through a week later |
