i have a normal tv /nav screen in my ffrr can it be upgraded to the touch screen

also does anyone have link to upgrade my nav maps i have the mk3 cd nav unit

no you cant upgrade from non to touch screen as the wiring is completely different, and links to non copyrighted downloads are not allowed.. ... - .- -.

But it is possible to upgrade with an MK4 system he can bought for exemple on the bay

need to do the nav mk4 upgrade soon as the old mk3 is 2bob looks like a spectrum 48k graphics

the mk3 system is easily upgraded to the mk4 dvd based jobby and the dvd mapping disc might be in with the price ...if the dvd is not included , the map software 'can' be downloaded..  ... - .- -.

there are also after market style options IIRC that run on windows ce and android i think one ran on with everything built in like DVB-T and so forth.

the problem with the winCE based ones is that they are so clunky, even more so than the FFRR one ,but if you can put up with that they're a good alternative..the future must be the internet based units .. ... - .- -.

Im sure the android ones should be half decent, i mean they can put a decent processor and ram in them so they shouldn't be too bad.

IIRC someone on here has one fitted and thinks its quite good, maybe go and see it and see how it feels.

For those with the CD-Radio OEM the aftermarket satnav is a good alternative. Ripping out an OEM nav to replace it with an aftermarket unit is a silly thought.

dannyp, one thing to keep in mind is that the head unit you have is not capable of displaying a great picture, the touch screens almost doubled in resolution, the nav upgrade does run better but the price for the mk4 units are high. you can go for a car pc that involves changing the screen to a aftermarket touch screen but fitting it in to your factory unit. you will be looking at changing the tv module for a digital free view unit.. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

Yes, the system is no longer cutting edge and yes the monitor's resolution could be better and yes, the twisty push-knob is a bit of a PITA to use. Updated with a MKIV the system works really well tho. And with judicious use of BMW bits you can add bluetooth, voice recognition, iPod/MP3, reverse camera, and all sorts of other neato peteato additions. And you'll have a system that really works well and is integrated into the car like no other aftermarket system - unless you're willing to put the amount of work and time in that Matt Stevenson did (or is - don't know that he's finished yet). Search under his UN - there's more info if you're interested in building a custom carPC. I elected to go a less time consuming route so that I would be guaranteed to finish (I've got my share of unfinished projects floating around...). I have a touch screen overly on my monitor and switch to my carPC via the mode button. Daveo's system is similar only with a BMW system emulator so that he can use the twisty push-knob to interface with the system.

Without going to a carPC - or even if - I'd still consider the following:

Satnav:

parts needed: MKIV (DVD) drive & latest FW. Plenty of info and Mattstevenson even has modified FW avail for download for free on his site

iPod/iPhone:

parts needed: intravee + Alpine KCA 420i - http://intravention.co.uk/
You can do similar with other units for less (Dice, Grom)- but this is the best. If you do a carPC you can skip this bit

Dave, we've been through this before. I know you've got the PC hooked to your nav and a windows desktop look like ship - but you're going through a VGA-TV converter too.

On native resolution the pic is quite good - and TBH unless you're extremely farsighted or watch TV at 4 inches it really is ok. And you can't read a windows desktop from the driver's seat in a 2012 RR either.

You can click on the little bird and check the details in the pic... Thought this was ok as an example this afternoon. Yes, you can make it better, but the ROI is not worth it IMO. A dual view screen, tho...
