Range Rover Values

A good question for our resident expert sales men.....................

Is it more cost effective (eg, you'll probably loose less money) to change Range Rovers every 1 , 2 or 3 years ?
if buying new each time.

What's the average loss over the years ?

Someone should make up a cost/value table & post it for future owners to ponder (or cry) over
Thumbs Up

There was a 1997 P38 on the bay of fleas starting at just £1.....I can't imagine in 14 years thinking I'll be selling mine for a quid.... Crying or Very sad

I'm no expert, but I'd imagine it depends on a number of factors such as spec, number of miles driven, etc etc, as well as some real unknowns, such as what will happen to L322 values when the L405 arrives, for example when the new BMW 7 series Bangle version arrived, the older models value temporarily went up since it became more popular than it's younger brother due to the controversial styling.

Who knows how the L405 will be received. I guess there are other factors such as how the economy is doing which will all affect the price.

I'm sure Gaz will be able to give you some book figures for how much you'll lose in depreciation over 12, 24 and 36 months though.

Also remember, it's totally irrelevant where an auction starts, the only thing that matters is where it ends, and if you see a P38 auction about the end at £1, then snap it up! Thumbs Up Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Very approximately, for a well cared for example with low-average miles I would guess...

1yr old - about 20% - 25% less than the original retail price - the VAT element being a large contributor to the loss in value.

2yr old - about 30% - 35% less (maybe 40% if less popular colour or spec - or - revised engine or spec since being released)

3yr old - about 50% (In very good condition but no longer within warranty)

Assuming the average price of a desirable 3yr old FFRR to be approx £35000 (£40000 max) by this time? - I would guess a continual depreciation of about £5K a year over the next couple of years

Neutral

If I could afford to buy a new Range Rover and then look to buy another new car 1,2 or 3 years later I wouldn't imagine I'd care about depreciation!! Laughing FFRR TD6 HSE

I'm not expecting a huge drop with the L405 comming out, explain my reasoning.

The L322 was the most expensive re-design of a car ever. Just take that in - EVER. Circa 1 billion USD.

Very highly specified and the design has lasted for 10 years. Its only a shame ford got their hands on it and removed the built in air jack. Tata, as good as they maybe will not have rethought the design to the same standard, they have re-released several other models, and jags, but not to the same standard. As much as I like the evoque for what it is, i wish they had not cashed in on the Range Rover brand - a little piece of me died when i learned there was to be a two wheel drive version. I highly doubt the new version of the full fat will be in production 10 years after its release.

For that reason, i suspect that the L322 will not nose dive in value for a few years post L405, and might even become more sought after. __________________

I thought it worked out that for the first year or two they lost circa £1000-1500 per month and then it slows a little bit??

Still its a LOTTA money to be putting down the pan every month and unless me and the wife were on 60k+ a year i cant see many people in the current climate wanting to do it Sad

Dont get me wrong i love my FFRR now, even with its dam buzzing and fuel craving, but past 23k the amount they lose just scares me sensless, and no im not a yorkshire man or scot(though more scots than brits have private plates you know!)

Us Scots were still Brits the last time I looked!!

As for the original question, I would think that regularly buying new is the most expensive way to own cars no matter when you change them. Although some cars will buck that trend because of tight supply/long waiting lists - buying a new Evoque right now would probably not lose you that much over the next year or so. I used to work for IBM and they kept their company cars for exactly 3 years and 10 months before replacing them. You can bet they had rooms-full of people working out the optimum change time.

cheaperst way to own a RR and have good reliability is to buy at 12 months old and run it for 10 years. That way you get a fresh vehicle, the balance of the manufacturers warranty, and if you keep up to date with FLRSH you will also benefit from an element of after warranty care, i.e. LR will look sympathetically at certain out of warranty claims. If you change your vehicle every 2 or 3 years you are chucking dealer profit down the pan - unless you buy private.
