Anybody on here a member of such an organisation? I've found one local to me and I'm quite keen to offer my services when the weather gets bad, but I wonder how well organised these things are and how effective I would be since I've got very little (in a RR) bad weather driving.

I also wondered about the insurance implications, as I'm sure they might not look favourably on using your car for such purposes?

Thanks Stan, but it doesn't really answer my questions about folks experiences of actually doing it, as opposed to tramping up and down a military firing range courtesy of the Royal Artillery!

The insurance implications concern me also.

Insurance - Inform them you do voluntry work, for call outs you use the National 3rd party insurance.

It's all done,as said, on a voluntry basis and controlled by the local controller.

Commitment, that's up to you, as little or as much as you want, if you answer the call you can say yes or no, no pressure.

Skills - Depends on area and how much you want to learn, only your local area can answer that, in the NW, we have a basic driving test to make sure you know how to drive and you what your car can, or carn't do. That is the min. No point having a 4x4 then thinking you are superman.


The best thing is to talk to your local group, sign up to their forum and ask, get the feel of things and if it's for you then go for it.

By the way, recovering other cars, we only do that, under 4x4 Response, if asked by the Police, unless you have the OK from the area controller. Everyting has to be cleared by them or the National Insurance is invalid.
