2005 Range Rover Vogue SE Supercharged Tonga Green

URGENT advice please - subwoofer

Going to keep this short, car in pieces, it's dark and the mood of the wife is getting darker.

Had a nasty rattle from the sub. Tried the one accessible fixing bolt, was loose, tightened it, no better.

Stripped the panel out, found by tapping the cone of the sub, I could hear a metallic rattle.

Took the speaker out, found the following:

Looks to me that the "bit in the middle" which I think should be driven by the coil, forcing the cone in and out has become detached.

Now the urgent bit. I reckon this speaker is toast, so little to lose. I think I am going to run a bead of hot melt glue around the central bit, to stick it to the cone.

Is this a disastrously bad idea for any reason?

probably better with a silicone sealer as it will be more flexible

Hot melt glue should be OK, you may need something stronger ultimately as the 'bit in the middle' is the driver of the speaker (not technically accurate but you know what I mean) and makes the whole cone panel move - On a sub the movements can be quite violent so it needs to be a strong bond.

Been watching some YouTube stuff from the states. One recommends a 2 part epoxy. Had been leaning towards silicone, but don't think the cone flexes much that close to the centre so now starting to think about araldite. Got the time it takes me to finish my take away curry ( wife not cooking ) to decide!

Araldite now on, so not better suggestions now please! 10 mins to set before handling, so will install it tonight, but not going to exercise it til tomorrow.

Why not try a local audio specialist store and see if they have anything in that could replace it??

No better suggestions - pretty sure epoxy was the best way to go.

No audio specialist is going to have speakers in that shape and size, so if it doesn't hold, you either do some adaption of another speaker or look on the bay or a breakers.

Because they are all shut.

That may well be the next move if plan A goes belly up.

All back together now, getting to the sub is trivial once you have done it once. Will report back.

Early signs are this just may have worked, no more odd rattling thumps from the back (even to Britney, Dan).

It is even possible that a 2 part epoxy was not just the best available option last night, but was actually the right thing.

Just to close this out.

Araldite was not quite as neat as I would like, applied with a long wooden skewer between the cone and the underside of the voice coil and some squished out as I pushed the coil down. Araldite rapid sets really quite fast !) so need to work fairly quickly.

Just about a week in now, and seems to be holding up, and sounding fab!
