Insurance for young male drivers aged 17

So my son has passed his test, and is wanting a car. Passed the end of last month.

What are the best companies to insure a 17 year old boy?

Which cars are the lowest on insurance?

It makes it cheaper if I go as a second driver, doesn't it?

Also, he needs to be the first driver or won't build up a good no claims?

He needs to be first driver or he's not insured! If you go second, it had better be true that you use the car, these things never matter until you have a claim, then they can invalidate your insurance.

I believe you'll find that sometimes cars which are cheaper to insure can take you by surprise, i.e. the average crappy little Corsa type thing that many young drivers go for, could be more expensive than something more interesting.

I'd just shop around the main price comparison sites, put in his details, and try with a number of cars. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV8 Vogue SE

you might find that an older car like a mondeo will be cheaper, firstly because the age and secondly the insurers think of a mondeo etc to be more safer than a whizzy hatchback.. ... - .- -.

Exactly, as I said above, the usual type cars get loaded by the insurers due to all the other 17 year olds crashing them, so you end up with a double whammy, having a high loading for the car, as well as the driver. Go for something like a ten year old 3 series and it can be much cheaper!!

Also look for specialised policies which put a black box in the car, and charge per mile, or prohibit driving after 10pm 2012 SDV8 Vogue SE

Try the back of maxpower and such like mags as they often have ins co's for young drivers.

TBH if you OR your wife drive it i would be more inclined to add your wife on than yourself as that helps bring it down more so, but also get him to sit a pass plus as that can knock another 10% off.
Limit milage unlesss he zips up and down the country, and stay below a 1600cc engine no matter what size car it is and maybe think of getting him an auto Smile

PS, try a C2 Furio 1.4 senso drive, as my brother found that was about £1400 for him on his own policy when he used it instead of adding on to my mums policy when he was 19/20 at uni Smile

Sugest you buy a tub of vassaline.
Pass plus no longer has any real bennefit since the DSA admited it had NO effect.
My son is with Admiral who were the best, still £1400 on a 56 plate TD5 90, 2 years accident free and a ROSPA Gold.
There is a 1 in 5 chance he will crash it within 6 months. 10 year old Corsa, 106, clio etc will fold like a pack of cards and him with it.
What the car is, within reason, now makes little difference to the cost of insurance but makes a hell of a difference when he runs out of skill.
I am afraid he now belives he can drive, like the friend of my son did, his funeral was 2 weeks ago.
Take him to a skid pan and get him some real driver training. letters not necessarily in the right order

Very true and if he doesnt crash it will be a near miss or two talking from my own experience as well Sad

Get him something with enough airbags in it to make it float and then at least you don't need to worry about him not coming back one night Sad

Try getting quotes for a car based van. Van insurance is calculated differently. Chap I know does this as he has a DD on his licence and it's a lot cheaper than a car. He runs a Ford Transit Connect and pays 300 quid a year even with a DD conviction.

Pmpl that would be great for a 17 yr old.

Only 2 passengers, and how long before the load area has a mattress in it and some big speakers Wink
