Fuel outlet fitting too big for new filter?

Hi! I'm doing an "I just bought this, please don't break" overall service on my 160k mile 08 Supercharged, and one of the jobs I'm working on is changing the fuel filter unit on the right side of the tank.

I bought the Eurospares unit, made in GB, and everything went well until I went to replace the fuel outlet fitting, and it wouldn't fit in the new filter. I've tried a bit of silicone grease and all the pressure my thumbs can muster, but I'm afraid I'll break something. I double-checked the part number against the LR catalog, and it is indeed labeled WCG500140, which should be correct for the Supercharged model.

Is this a known issue? Has someone else run into this? What are my options aside from spending three times as much on the LR one?

Given the color of the old gas that came out of the old filter, I'm loathe to put it back in. I'm pretty sure that it's original to the car.
