Faulty thermostat?

2013 RR 5.0 SCV8. I’m thinking the thermostat is going bad? Anyone have insight?

Coolant temp 1 appears to get closer to the correct operating temp while coolant temp 2 never gets close. The pictures are from startup to highway driving over roughly 15 minutes.

The gauge cluster sits perfectly in the same spot as always. It does seem to take longer to warm up though.

Can anyone upload a GAP screenshot of what the coolant temps of properly operating thermostat should be?

Code that cause check engine light several times.

Whilst I dont have a 5.0SC, my experience of all the V8's i've had before ( 3.5, 3.9, 4.0, 4.2SC, 4.4) is that they have all had no issue with getting up to temperature ... as engines in general, petrol V8's just dont run cool by themselves. As far as a I know, the thermostat should regulate at 95degC at factory spec and that some have fitted an 85degC replacement. So if you're not getting upto operating temp, then its being over-cooled, which really can only come from the radiator doing the cooling ... which is fed by the thermostat.

So, my guess is that the thermostat is stuck open and feeding the radiator too much and cooling too much, and I would replace it as the first port of call.

Do you know where the second temp sensor is located ? I'm guessing it might be radiator outlet temp or something similar? ( It starts at 11degC ... which is possible the ambient temp at time ? ) V8 or else ...

as fish said, most probably thermostat. On my Diesel TDV8, my thermostat housing was cracked by a garage doing an inlet manifold replacement, causing the engine to run cool.

Temp sensor 1 is located at the rear of the engine. Temp sensor 2 is located at the thermostat stat.

I called my shop yesterday as they replaced a few coolant hoses six weeks ago. I reviewed the work order and one of the “coolant hoses” they replaced was in fact the thermostat. However, they use an Uro aftermarket unit instead of the Land Rover one. I am guessing this is the culprit.

I will swing by today and see how we shall proceed from here. They have a 12 month / 20,000 km warranty on parts/labour so I am guessing I might only need to pay the difference in price for an OEM unit.

More to come. Dan. 🇨🇦 2013 L405 5.0 SCV8
