5.0 vs 4.4

hi everyone

ive being looking for a while and was after a 4.4 or possibly a d300, but a decent priced 5.0 has come up and I was wondering who much more to run a 5.0 was than a 4.4 or a d300? purchase price is cheaper with the petrol so does it even itself out over 3 years say doing 10k a year?

Who cares! Petrol is cheaper and no service/ cost due to extra oil changes not needed every 3k miles etc!
If i knew what I do now I would have the 5.0 Whistle 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

agree with kot...get what you want and dont worry about the fuel cost.

you must have seen other threads on the forum 'debating' the advantages/disadvantages of different engines and by now you should know your future purchase.

The New 4.4L V8 in the L460 (I assume that's the one you're talking about - does it come in the 405?) is BMW and quite a bit of kit so I hear. The 5.0L is the Jaguar and whilst lovely, is older and can have its issues with chains etc.

If you mean the L322 4.4L I wouldn't waste your time.

I had the 4.4 V8 in a 7 series and it’s a fantastic engine, goes well, sounds good (2017 so pre opf) and over 40mpg was easily achievable on the motorway. It was less reliable than my SDV8 which followed though, as it had an oil leak from a pipe leading to one of the turbos which is a common problem and a slight coolant leak. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

Don't know anything about the costs of fueling an oil burner. The 5.0SC - driven moderately but briskly most of the time, mixed distances/roads/laden, will cost of the order of £3.3k to fuel for a 10k mile year. Only you can judge if that is prohibitive.... Mike - MPx

Having liked the 4.4TDV8 in my 2012 322, I was planning to get a 4.4 SDV8 405. But once it became AdBlue I decided it was too complicated and looked at the 5.0 SC instead. I've never regretted choosing it. While the 4.4 SDV8 is very nice to drive, the 5.0 SC is quieter and more refined at lower speeds and has much more to offer in the way of overtaking etc, the power is so effortless one needs to keep legal restrictions in mind. Over 75,000 miles now. Such problems as there have been have been general 405 issues, not related to the engine. I'd say it is a bit noisier than when it was new, but I'm attributing that to ageing of the noise insulation materials, rather than rattles or the like from the engine.

MPx's comment about his fuel cost prompted me to look at mine last year - just under 13,000 miles for about £4,700 of Shell V Power, mixed driving, but not too much urban. It does include having Goodyear Duratracs from October to March and being off road about once a week which would combine to increase fuel use by maybe 10%. But no AdBlue, no DPF worries, no oil dilution and no supplementary oil changes. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Had my 4.4 SDV8 for 6 years and it never let me down; fast and responsive. Last year I swapped it for a 5.0 SC. Its great somfar; aweome power delivery, smooth and docile, but give it a kick dwon on a good road and you hit licence losing speeds in seconds.

Great fun on French autoroutes when diesel Macan’s rush up behind you flashing their lights. Plant the right foot and leave them for dust….. 2024 - 2021MY L405 5.0 SC Portofino Blue
