Hybrid - which engine?

I think it may well be inevitable that when I change my V8 diesel I'll be getting an electric RR as my driving pattern has changed considerably recently. I do lots of very short journeys (less than 10 miles) now with the occasional (fortnightly) jaunt down a motorway. On the motorway I tend mostly to drive around 60 - 70 mph to keep out of the way of the HGVs with the occasional need for speed when overtaking. The motorway journeys are a minimum of 20 miles with another 20 getting to the motorway. I initially turned my nose up at diesels because of the potential oil dilution problem I read so much about but then I realised that the short journeys would be completed on electric only so this might not be an issue, I'm not even sure they all have DPFs either. I never tow, never go off-road so my current car is probably a bit of overkill although the shove in the back when you put you foot down to overtake is very nice.

So I have been looking at p400e models around 2021/22 model years but they tend to have the 2L petrol engine and I read a lot about snapped crankshafts but that might be one on the diesels that are now back in the game. I am also imagining the the price of plug in electric RRs will fall further when JLR introduce us to their all electric model. Geoff

Cranks aren’t the worry with 2l Ingeniums (and I haven’t really read much about P400e engine issues).

It does sound like a hybrid makes sense for the driving you do. But…and no offence intended to owners….a 4 cylinder Range Rover is just wrong to me. My sister used to have a P400e Sport so I do I have some experience of the engine and the way the hybrid tech works. She’s replaced it with a P550e which is a lot better.

So the answer to your question is a L460 with a 6 cylinder engine, but I appreciate they are a lot more money. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

As our America friends would say thats quite a chunk of change extra and I like the L405 much better that the L460 (I'm sure it will grow on me). Obviously another option for the L405 would just be a 5L petrol. Geoff

I was loaned a P400E Sport when my FFRR went in for crash repairs (not my fault!! Thumbs Up )and I wasn't at all impressed. The car was lumpy and the range on electric was dire.

I charged to full overnight (30 miles range it said), and drove it down the village high street (about 3/4 mile) and back in the morning and the same in the evening so a total of 3 miles max plus windscreen wipers on and lights in the evening. The original charge said 30 miles range but that evening after my little trips the range said 7 miles!!

I have a MHEW 3.0 and all journeys show an average (real figures) of 30.4mpg.....stick to diesel whatever Mr Milibean says Censored Censored All LR cars from 1984

Early pheasant had a lot of trouble with the electric heaters failing …..is this still the case or have the manufacturers solved the issues? This problem was not limited to JLR but across a wide range of Hybrids who used the same technology for heating when in battery power. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

So wanted to add Tinmans thread but the video doesn't work !!!!! anyone got another link?

So @supershuttle, if you buy a MY21 hybrid, make sure its got JLR extended warranty as you will only have 5Y useful life of the battery at best. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

I’m now a month into a 2021 P400 (not e) petrol. It’s giving similar mpg to my previous TDV8 so maybe worth a thought. Straight six as well. Cool

Hi All, What was reported by High Peak Autos is that we should expect that most Hybrid's will fail after 70k miles, as with any electrical component they tend to have problems?

He got round the £22k replacement problem by finding someone to fix the battery, which has many components not jus the very small batteries that make up the whole unit.

Any problems with a Hybrid,High Peak Autos used these guys.

That's a pretty sweeping statement, because he had a problem it means they will all have problems. Just like the crankshaft problem. The internet is full of problems. Not good viewing saying I have never had any problems, can't see many subscribers to that. Knee jerk reaction to everything nowadays.
How many times have you read comments of never buy a Range Rover as they are always breaking down, usually by someone who has never owned one, or my next door neighbours, grandads, pals, sons, girlfriends, dad knew someone.
There are multiple reasons for cars with problems, but it's never the way they are maintained or not.
Has anyone got any real stats on the problems on batteries or for that matter crankshafts Whistle

I'm thinking that the p400e will suffice for my needs. As my old boss used to say "there's always a good reason not to do something" and as chicb says the internet will give you those reasons. I bet there are hundreds of satisfied customers with p400e's blissfully unaware that the internet says they should have had a new battery Rolling with laughter So before I pull the trigger I'd be delighted to hear from any satisfied P400e users - if there are any, and none of the V8 or die Censored please I've had three including the 5L petrol and I miss them all for different reasons (one of the 3 is the car I currently have) Geoff

Geoff,
I have a 2021 Range Rover Fifty P400e. I bought it about August 2024. I don't do much miles average around 10/day as I have other cars. Bought to replace Sport 3litre diesel (the one's with the cranks that are always breaking Big Cry ) I must have been lucky, never had a problem with that car. Thumbs Up
Fifty is so refined, really quiet. I let the car decide when it's using the engine or battery. Do not know when it changing from one to the other & it is pretty quick with non of the stuck in no mans land when coming away from a roundabout, which was a problem with the Sport.
It says it does 30 miles when fully charged. Real life 20 to 25miles. I normally charge it when it gets down to around 10 to 13miles left, Approx every 3 to 4 days. I'm with British gas for energy so changed to EV tariff which gives me cheap rate from 00.00 till 05.00am. Use granny charger which is fine. An installed charger is around £1000, so figured I would get a lot of charges for £1000 & I'm never needing a quick charge. Costs, just going by my smart meter readings, 13 to 30 miles is around £0.80. 0 to 30 is around £1.50. Set charging times to suit yourself. Servicing is every 2 years , but I'm leaving it to 1 year interval. Anything else you require, ask.
