Slight intermittent burning smell

Has anyone had the same:

It’s comes as a faint, oily burning smell, after a bit of longer run on the dual carriageway. It doesn’t happen all the time and is only noticeable inside the cabin and only when I come to a stop.

When I get out and smell under the bonnet when I get home I can’t smell anything unusual. I’ve been trying to see if I’m leaking a bit of oil from the rear orings or cooler but it’s tricky to get my camera in there to see.

Any ideas, I would have thought if it was a leak it would have done it all the time, I first noticed it about 12 months ago, then nothing, then just before Xmas, on a run down to Bath towing, then a little bit last weekend but only a faint whiff.

I was wondering if it was the DPF regen but I don’t think that smells…..🤷‍♂️ There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mine also does this, no drips on the drive either, I am suspecting the oil cooler gasket - I may be wrong I usually am Rolling with laughter I realise that my reply is not at all helpful but in the words of the advert "you are not alone" Geoff

You can get a smell off the regen as everything gets to a silly temperature to burn the soot off, but its not an oil smell, hard to explain but just a fumey burning smell, unless you have a slight leak that’s getting oil on the exhaust or crossover pipe, then smells when you regen or work it harder like towing or long run.

Yeah it’s a funny smell, halfway between oil and tarmac….. very faint at the moment but it was quite noticeable before Xmas when I went down to Bath. Possibly makes me think leak as that was at the same time as the EGT sensor went. So in theory…… couldn’t regenerate with the duff sensor? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I’ve ordered a cooler and some O rings, and will do them in the next couple of weeks. It was on my list of preventative jobs, time to get the spanners back out……

Just checked the coolant and there’s no oil in it so if it is the cooler it’s probably the bottom gasket rather than the middle one which has gone. But for peace of mind I’ll put a whole new cooler in.

It’s got to be right as I’m planning to drive it to the alps at the end of next month for some Skiing….. though a more wise man than me might take the D5 van….. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Think your doing the best thing TBH by starting with the oil cooler, its the most probable cause and is eliminated if the problem should continue. Thumbs Up we do loads of these and some on the later 20 plates with reasonable mileage on too sub 50K.

Yeah, doesn’t look too hard. I’ve had all the plenum and throttle body off a 4.4 when I had my 322, so about 50% of the job…..iirc it wasn’t too bad. I’m thinking the wiper arms might be the hardest bit to get off if they’ve seized on…… Rolling with laughter

On the bright side I can do it in the garage and still shut the door so it’s doesn’t have to be done in a day! If the bits are here I’ve got a free day next weekend!

Hoping not to drop any coolant into the oil galleries but I will get some spare oils in just in case and I can do an oil swap if needed….. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Just a quick update to close.

I managed to get the cooler swapped and did the orings at the same time. There was a fair bit of oil round the middle join on the cooler. So it definitely needed doing. And as the turbo pipe was coming out anyway made sense to do those as well.

It still smelled a little bit after a run on Sunday, but as quite a bit of coolant went down the back of the engine, followed by a bit of oil (all under control, coolant was from dropping off the coolant pipe, and oil just from lifting the cooler), I suspected it would. Hopefully it will fade over the next few weeks.

It’s due to take me and Laddo down to the Alps in a few weeks so hopefully it will make it!! Debating on taking the disco 🕺 instead. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

NMJ,

I don't suppose you followed a write up or wiki post on this did you.?

I have the exact same issue (i think) generaly can't smell much when driving but when stopped, and especially when reversing into a parking space, I can smell it inside the cabin. Its an in between oil and rubber burning type smell?

Think I'm going to have to look at it but would be good if someone has detailed the steps - I'm no mechanic...but do own some tools Laughing

Thanks Ash

There is a write up on here Ash, it’s in the Wiki. I added a few more steps for the 405 to the end of it as it was for the 322 originally.

https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic48745-75.html

You have to take off the wipers, plastic windscreen trim, strut braces and the secondary bulkhead centre section to get the best access.

At this point you should get a good idea if there is much oil round the back of the cooler and round the turbo feed pipe.

Then it’s plenum off a couple of cables annd pipes out of the way and the rear plenum support and you are at the cooler, a couple of connections on the cooler, 10 bolts holding it down and it’s off.

It’s not hard spannering just a few things to be aware of. Mainly you don’t want water in the oil. So drain some coolant out, so the coolant in the block is lower than the cooler, which I did through the cooler coolant outlet itself, by sucking it out with my oil drain pump, I ended up taking about 3 l out.

I followed the instructions in the WM and in the wiki, other than the coolant drain. It took me about 4 hours, the o rings at the back of the cooler which also leak can be done as well as that pipe comes off too.

Can’t seem to find one online as OEM but the genuine part is made by Mann + Hummel, LRparts.net do offer one as OEM but no indication who the Mfr is…..

In the end I went for a gen one. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
