Sump Oil Plug Tap

Hi all,
Does anyone have any experience with the tap style sump plugs (as per the picture)? Are they worth it? Are they likely to open on their own etc?
Thanks

Hi
I did buy one but never fitted it as initially I found a external rib in the way on the sump casting. I was about to Dremel grind the rib down locally but had second thoughts about fitting it and didnt...its still in my odds and sods drawer. (It is very well made though).
My reasons :-
1/ The shape juts out quite away (40 mm from seating face).... a risk of getting caught when passing over something that maybe is clipped by the tyre and jumps up and hits the underside tripping the release or snapping the valve off.

2/ The lever is held in a notched recess by a spring......springs can fail. I did buy the extra locking spring clip to fit as well (See picture).

maybe too cautious ??

I'd be a bit worried it opened on its own!

Probably great for a stationary engine installation, or marine application, but really not sure under a moving vehicle? 1992 RR Classic 3.9 efi Vogue

I've used these on dozens of vehicles over thousands of miles. They are indeed very well made. The recess the lever sits in is pretty deep the spring holding it in place quite strong - I don't think it would be possible for it to undo unintentionally.

Similarly you'd have to be incredibly unlucky for the lever to be hit or caught by something and break off.

They make draining the oil much cleaner, especially if you fit a plastic tube which also enables you to avoid chassis members etc. 2012 TDV8 Westminster in the New Forest
