Thanks, will order that so can change plus already have the two seals for oil pipe

For the cooler itself, do I need any extra gaskets or comes with it, assume just the bottom one required as its whole cooler so don't need the one thats inside it, wasn't following what you meant, thanks

Hi, depends on what you buy, the Nissen unit I bought came with the rubber gasket already fitted so no need to buy an additional one.

In the diagram below the oil cooler (4) itself sits on a intermediate assy (5)(EGR Cooler), if your just replacing the oil cooler because it is leaking, whic is the most common, then you only need to go down as far as removing item 4. If your leak is furtherdown then you'll need to also remove item 5 and replace the gasket under there.

I just did the oil cooler itself and the gasket between item 4 & 5 was already fitted to the base of item 4.





The 2 small pipes folks talk about connect on the right end of the cooler itself in the diagram, it is possible to replace those with the cooler in place but it's really fidly and largely blind activity. If your removing the cooler anyway you can do it then easliy.


The water connector is the one you can see on the right of the cooler assy, the connector itself and the O ring in pics below.

As I said, good strip down guides here in the wiki so I won't try to emulate those but in picture below, those 2 spigots circled are about 35mm long making it hard to remove the assy, I cut them down so you could wriggle it apart, they only need be about 10mm to secure properly

cheers very much for the advice, qq, do I need to drain the oil or coolant or just a bit comes out I am seeing. I have bought the draper oil extraction tool but it has not come yet, however cooler and seals are here so can I do this without draining anything as might get fired into this tonight and tomorrow. I notice the new cooler has new oil filter assembly on, assume there a filter in it (should I check I wonder), and I have spare filter to change oil after so ideal to change cooler, get it running, check for leaks and do oil change after. Also similar with coolant, leave it filled, take a bit of spillage and change that again? many thanks

Hi,

I changed the oil and filter after changing the cooler as I could not be sure that I didn't get any water contamination in the oil.

I was doing a full service at the same time so I did replace the coolant, but I'm not sure you'd have to, but probably best as oil may have seeped in there.

Got start on this earlier, about point to release water pipes and unbolt cooler, not been to bad to this point, tip to cut short these little studs helpful, I found by cutting one plate comes off ok. Noticed got some not terrible oil stain round throttle body and air inlet pipe, inside intake pipe was just the normal light smear of oil you get through intercooler so don't think its from there. Could this also be from cooler but getting sprayed forward on occasion or suggestion where common leak. Pic is from drivers cylinder bank but actually bit more on passenger bank, not really soaked looks partially dried up which made me wonder if it just a little from cooler also. Will post progress if get back to it tomorrow. Have also removed the battery (bit of a faff also) to charge it since car sitting. Will stick pics up tomorrow to help anybody else doing this, hopefully go smooth, thanks

Well, got it off short while ago, but disaster as I was removing it I leaned on what looks like top bit of thermostat housing or something and broke off small bore pipe at top as in picture. Its the other end of the pipe thats prone to snapping off as you take inlet pipe to throttle body pipe off. It looks like the top bit unbolts what is it and can it be bought separately or am I looking at whole thing










Way more coolant has come out as lifted cooler out, possibly cause of snapping that pipe or is that normal. Do I clean out all these channels on top before fitting cooler on? Many thanks

think it called bleed pipe, LR023142, assuming I am probably the only idiot who has managed to snap this off before. But if anybody has taken that off before does it just unclip on wee tangs on either side?
