Wheel and Tyre options

I've searched the WIKI to no avail and also googled and got conflicting advice.

I have a 2007 3.6 TDV8 running standard 19" wheels however I like the look of 20" wheels and so when the tyres are due I may well change as there are plenty of "sets" on eBay - this gives rise to a couple of questions.

1. What will fit comfortably under the arches.
2. Will the fatter wheels from a sport fit.
3. If I get bigger wheels do I really have to get 5 or is it OK to retain the 19" spare as a get me home measure given the actual rolling diameters will be pretty close.
4. Are there settings that need changing on the car if larger wheels are fitted or is that a myth.

I'm sure that this sort of stuff is on here but I'll chance a bit of abuse by asking again.

Thanks all
Thumbs Up Geoff

I have been thinking about a set of winter and/or off-road tyres.

When I have looked at the offroad tyres, it would seem difficult to find anything with the correct speed rating (W for the 4.2S/C, IIRC).

What do others do? Ignore it (insurance issue?).

Don't know why speed rating is an issue with insurers. If the legal limit in this country is 60/70, if anything goes wrong (e.g. accident) and you are going faster than the indicated limit, your insurers will not pay out anyway. So if an "offroad/winter" tyre is rated at anything above 70 then I can't see a problem. However, if you regularly make use of the Fuhrer's autobahns, things might be different.

I fitted General Grabbers as my "winter set" on 18" rims, and never get close to the speed rating, plus mysummer 20" wheels have tyres that cost an extra £125 each! For a speed rating I will not go at nor the car can do! .

Just remember if going for the wider 20" RRS wheels to get them shod with 295/45's or 275/50's as the more usual 275/40's look a bit silly in the bigger FF arches (have them on mine until i can justify changing) and are also a bit harsher on bumpy roads. Much closer to stock 255/55 diameter as well.

Having bought at least 5 sets of stormers with tyres for my Discovery I would advise you stick to the geniune RR wheels and recomended tyres. There are lots of copies out there some do not carry the correct load index etc. I too am tempted by the look of the 20's when my tyres wear out but if you fit 20s it definetly makes for a harder ride which I do not want to compromise. I do however love the look of the 20's. Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

I guess I ought to talk to my insurance co about it. I personally agree with you - not going to be doing 100mph+ on winter tyres (or summer ones for that). However, I do worry that they may use any excuse...

Where does one find the load rating?

the load rating is after the tyre size and before the speed rating..
