Burning rubber smell N/S/R

Hi Guys, I need the wisdom of the site members on this please. 2011 TDV8. This fault is intermittent but I suspect may be caused by moderate to heavy braking. Symptoms are N/S/R Smells of rubber (not brake smell), almost like when you have done a wheel spin. There is a slight bind on the same N/S/R. This is intermittent. The rear disc is getting hot but more hot near the hub, today, cooler near the edge of the disc. It wasn't hot enough to burn, I could place my fingers on the area.

In recent months, I have replaced all rear discs and pads, new pad kit with new genuine slide pins. I checked the handbrake and shoes and all was ok. The caliper piston when last checked, moved freely. I have ordered a new rear caliper just in case.

My situation is that my wife is currently in hospital with a spinal fracture. I did have use of another car however, I hit a Deer head on today so the vehicle is not useable. I simply do not have time to pull everything apart on the car I need so much, so was hoping someone may have experienced this before and could narrow my diagnosis down a little. Thanks for any help.

Sorry to hear about the wife, tough thing sounds like. The deer hasn’t helped!!

From your description of the heat in the disc I would guess that’s fairly normal if your checking it after a leisurely drive, if you’re sure it’s rubber could it be something more inboard on the driveshaft perhaps?

Not sure there’s too many rubber bits around that area.

Best of luck with everything.

Jon

This may indicate the handbrake shoes are rubbing. Did you reset the handbrake when you changed the disks? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Hi all, thanks for the replies. Yes, hand brake shoes were all cleaned, adjusted and still appear to be working fine. I'm coming to the conclusion it must be a caliper fault. I've used the car all day today and it hasn't faulted
