Just had a quote for a detachable towbar from PF Jones. They have advised I cant have the Westfalia as all hybrids including the MHEV like mine are excluded. They have recommended the Tow Trust detachable.

My question though is about the electrics. PF Jones offer two vehicle specific 13 pin electrics. One for normal bulbs and the other for LEDs that also works with normal bulbs. Cost difference is £48.

I will need to get car coded by MD or independent as they cant do it.

I dont have LED lights on my trailer but if I borrowed a trailer with LED lights would they still work with the non LED wiring but just not report connected or give an error on the dash?

If you go with non LED and then use LED, they will flash randomly all the time. Like, both red and amber, not just indicators. Flicker might be a better description. They'll be useless.

Someone better qualified than me will be along, I'm sure, but basically LED on their own don't provide enough resistance.

For £48 I'd do the upgrade. It's what I did with my 405.

Didn’t know there was a problem with LED bulbs on the 405. When I had my tow bar done the electrics were just a plug in unit, which goes into the car. Pretty sure there wasn’t a module to fit, it’s just a short pigtail off then socket to a set of plugs behind the bumper. I don’t think there is a difference on the LR side between LED and Non LED.

Make sure whoever fits your bar knows that you don’t need a relay type system….

The wiring is super easy. I’ve just ordered a new socket for mine. So I will stand corrected if it comes with anything else in the box……

In terms of the difference between the physical metal bars it’s probably something to do with how the westfalia mounts. It has to metal bars which run alongside the wheel well. So presumably the battery is in the way.

There is no reason you shouldn’t be able to use dedicated standard plug and play electrics with any of the bars. I doubt Tow trust do one, but you should be able to either get a LR unit or even use the westfalia dedicated electrics. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
