L405 clocked mileage

Ok, I would welcome some thoughts please.

End sep I bought an l405 showing 29k miles, lwb auto. 4.4 for £40k on 17 plate. Arrived with me 2nd week Oct.

When plugging in diagnostics for a problem, Atul, since buying I struggled to see some data and things didn't seem right. Informed aupplier I thought there was an issue and would ask local diagnostic people to look at it. They said no probs warranty would cover it.

Sent it to my diagnostics chap he had same problem, couldn't access it completely.

Booked in to lr to ask them to rewrite ecu to original spec as we suspected it was lockef or similar. The earliest date they had was yesterday.

JlR state the ecu had been locked/fiddled with, and jlr saying its actual mileage around 54k miles. They can access it fully.

I bought it from a company remotely, london way, i am south west.delivered to me. They have been super helpful to deal with, it was going in to have rear vehicle detection problem looked at and ecu couldn't be accessed to diagnose this, hence finding out something was up.

So I have a host of things not quite right with it. Rear detection, knocking on the front, alarm goes off due to bonnet issue and a few minor things. Supplier has said they will cover all this warranty or otherwise.

I also have issue now of vehicle with 54k miles on it when clock shows 31k. Easy resolved with rewrite or pcm replacement by JLR, at a cost. But more importantly I have a vehicle with 25ish k more miles that I thought when I bought it.

The car works for me, it's what I want everything wise less the increased mileage against the price paid.

I think I am happy to keep it if the supplier pays to get everything put right onc pcm work and I believe makes a financial payment to offset the mileage difference.

What do people think? What's the price difference?

It took me 18mths to find the right vehicle. Cheers

James

If I was in your place, considering the huge discrepancy in the actual mileage, and all the other problems, I would reject the car. There may be other hidden problems with this car. Someone along the line knew about the mileage problem and it was not declared, what else did that person(s) not declare? You have to ask yourself was this done deliberately, sounds like it was.

What does the mot history show? It must have had three or more mots at that age. Does the mileage movement tally with the service history mileage?

Either the mileage was all removed before it was three years old or it has been tampered with on an annual basis. I would be tempted to do a detailed check on the car to see if there is not other unidentified issues in its history. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

I think what’s happened is they’ve changed the mileage and forgotten to alter other modules that have a memory for that data point. I may be wrong but it often requires a chip being changed to allow the “technician” to mess about with the data.

I think you need to have a conversation with the dealer and see what the numbers are. If they are willing to correct the issues and compensate you for the mileage discrepancy then perhaps it’s worth thinking about.

However, be aware of the following. If they correct the mileage on the record, I.e. it somehow shows a mileage discrepancy if you ran a vehicle check, then it really damages the resale value. If you get all this sorted and the vehicles history does NOT show a mileage discrepancy (according to DVLA) then maybe a deal is worth considering.

It sounds like the garage acted in good faith, I suspect it was an ex-lease car and someone was trying to avoid a hefty mileage charge upon its return.

Why would you clock a car for such a low milage? 14k difference is it worth the effort? 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

This might be a silly question, you dont think it has a new engine in it do you? hence the mileage discrepancy? If the original engine went pop and a new one was installed surely you would get a mileage discrepancy on ECU as there may be a mismatch? Only a thought?

It's more like 24K miles, but I get your point Smile

The car has probably been on a lease / PCP deal at some point in its life (as mentioned by Scouse Exile).

A vehicle leased on a 5K miles / annum basis is much cheaper per month than one on 15K miles / annum. So if it's happened in its first 3 years of life it's probably not been serviced when it should have been either.

I'd be checking its LR online service history (using the VIN) to see when the first service was carried out, it might not have been until 3 years was up (instead of annually), when some "mileage correction" was carried out (winding it back from 40K to 15K for example). Or someone may have actually gone to all the bother of having it corrected annually.

I've long suspected people take cars out on lease deals and have the car clocked before taking it back, especially when "mileage correction" services are cheaply offered by dodgy individuals. The lease companies are getting wise to this though and check multiple ECU's when the vehicle is returned to reveal the true mileage. What happens after that I don't know, but I'd be pursuing a fraud case against the individuals concerned if I was the lease company.

As D3Jon points out it’s more like 24k.

If you assume that someone got it on a cheap lease deal, say 10,000 miles at the most, and then did 24,000 over that during say 18 months / 2 years - the excess mileage could be as much as 15p to 20p - then the bill is somewhere around £3,600 to £4,800.

These mileage “correction” companies should correct all the data but if it’s been done on the cheap then they may have left footprints behind at the scene of the crime.

The engine idea also merits thought, not sure how that changes the mileage though as I’d would have imagined the data is on the ECU, unless that gets changed?

That's a wedge of money for a 2017 car - it wants to be beyond perfect for that sort of money!

If you do a deal with the selling dealer, it wants to include everything being fixed, mileage corrected in all ECU's, and something like £3 / £4K back to cover the extra miles it's covered.

But even then, you may always doubt what else either has or hasn't been done to the vehicle. This is true of any 2nd hand car purchase, but amplified when it already has a proven 'less than perfect' history, and further amplified by the fact you've paid top-dollar for your perfect dream vehicle.

As stated by others, how does the MOT mileage check out? What about it's online LR service history? Was it serviced every 12 months (and not just on mileage) as required by LR?

If it was me, personally, I'd reject it. I'd be forever wondering what else has been tampered with. For example has it been shunted, leading to your rear vehicle detection issues?

I’m not sure if you did your own checks before buying the car but most of the larger companies Hpi, carvertical ect offer a guarantee to discrepancies that show up especially on mileages after an assured report has been generated with varying amounts of compensation . Regarding the car itself the mileage could have been clocked from new with it covering twice as much as it should before its first service with Covid and dealers being closed and extensions being granted on servicing. I would reject the car just to eliminate any more nasty surprises. 2021 SVautobiography Dynamic Black ( Black wheels need to go )

It's never good paying a large wedge of your hard earned for a car and then discovering problems with it, which can spoil the whole experience. The issues you have identified are a serious red flag, not only around the history of the car, but what else has been messed with that you haven't found yet.

A 7 year old FFRR with an average mileage of 4k per year would have had me seriously questioning accuracy and £40k for a 2017 is huge money (even for LWB) so you'd expect a car in absolutely mint condition with full verified history etc with nothing needed. By comparison, in my recent search for an AB/Fifty Edition I saw a few excellent 2021 LWB examples for not much more than your 2017 cost. On AT at the moment there are around 15 LWB priced between £29-45k.

As others have mentioned, with so many question marks, I would be rejecting the car and looking for another. 2021 D350 Fifty Edition - Carpathian Grey

LWB - has it been a chauffeur/Uber Lux etc car? Suspect most of the stuff running around town visits Mo and his laptop every year before it’s serviced.

Clocking is 54k less 31k.

Mot and services tie in. So possibly done first 3 years. Cheers
