2014 4.4 SD V8 piston cooling jets anyone ?

Dear All,

New to the site and new to the Range Rover, if you discount the 3.5 I had for a brief spell in the 1970's, and now the query :-

I require piston cooling jets, x 4, for a 2014 4.4 SD V8 and according to the Aberdeen main dealer, Peter Vardy Land Rover, these jets are not listed as separate from the engine thus entailing a cost of £17,000 + VAT !
Any help to replace these butchered components would be very much appreciated.

Not quite correct, you could buy a short block for £5k + to obtain them 🤣🤣 as opposed to a stripped engine at £17k+ (neither however avaliable).

I have a spare 448DT block from when I rebuilt mine with a new block (also have a just delivered genuine JLR short block assembly, but that's another story).

Pretty sure my old block has the cooling jets still installed, I'll check on Monday and get back to you.

I take it you've bought a non runner or suffered a big end failure?

Aye Mike,
My brother bought the 2014 R.R. without doing his homework, turned out to have a cracked sump, damaged turbo and several other faults. Stripping the engine revealed two cooling jets intact and two broken with the remnants in the sump hence this plea for replacements. I find it rather shocking that Land Rover do not list this part separate from the block. If you can supply the four jets that would be very much appreciated.
Incidentally I've no real interest in cars, my passion is Ducati motorcycles, from the singles to the final cam belt drive 1098 series which I can strip, rebuild and enjoy, however my brother is my brother !

Saw the pics of your bike earlier, now they've dissapeared? I thought my 899 Panigale was a thing of beauty, but yours is something else!!

Sounds to me like your brother has been had over and the cars been put into a running state as cheaply as possible to sell it. Too much of it happening unfortunatley as genuine parts for the SDV8 are thin on the ground.

Have you discovered what has damaged the cooling jets as there's only really a damaged rod/piston assembly that could do that. Rods should be dot marked with their bore position (1-8) as they are all balanced as a set, make sure you haven't got an odd rod. I assume you've removed the crank to inspect the cooling jets and if so, I'd certainly pop a new set of mains and big ends into it. Again, if you've removed the crank, you'll need some tooling to time the cams up and also to fit the reluctor ring accurately.

I'll check on Monday, but sure I have the old block, pistons & rods as only the crank was unserviceable.

Any luck with the required 4.4 SD V8 piston cooling jets ?
The engine rebuild is outsourced to a local garage whose mechanic served his time with the Aberdeen L.R. main dealer, I've enough on my plate with an Argocat, Yamaha Bruin quad and Multistrada 1200S DVT lined up for repair or service.
As for the 899 Panigale, Ducati are phasing out the V2 sports bikes even though they've won the last two W.S.S. championships, perhaps they expect the G.P. budget to increase with No. 93 Marc Marquez on the books !
Regarding my

bikes I've 38 in total, 18 of which Ducati, the remainder Italian or British.

Beautiful bikes!!

My 899 is probably the only 2016 registered bike in the UK as it was won in an airport competition in Dubai and by the time it got shipped to the UK and finally registered with DVSA it was March 2016. (Bit of a kicker having to pay import vat, but you live and learn)! Fancied swapping for the V4 but the Mrs said no!!

With regards to the cooling jets, yes I've got them. Send me your address and I'll pop them in the post for you. I'm up at Aberdeen University Institute of Medical Science a couple of times a year, so you can get me a pint in next visit!

It's still very busy over there and well worth a visit.

If you’ve got an hour with a cup of tea have a look at these.
Yes the middle bike is a 1000SS not an earlier pre injection bike, but I’ve rebuilt it with 900 Superlight bodywork etc.

I don't care much for that Pierre TerribleBlanche 916 replacement abortion but the M900 is probably the best all rounder ever to come from Borgo Panigale, light weight, low seat, enough power to make things interesting and without the electronic gismos deemed necessary by today's press reports.
I service a friend's M900 he bought new in the '90's that's clocked up in excess of 60,000 miles without any major work required, Miguel Galluzzi got it spot on and saved Ducati from yet another possible bankruptcy.
I've had Ducatis since acquiring a broken 200SS in the 1960's and stuck with them ever since.

Are you an aficionado of the Beano's Dennis the Menace ?

Many thanks to 4RRS for the supply of the 4.4 SDV8 piston cooling jets; I'll get the garage to itemise the broken bits replaced inside the engine / gearbox assembly and post the result here, this will give an idea of a past assembly by a "Glasgow Screwdriver" - (Hammer, Large, Very) - aficionado.

This is also a huge thanks to Mike and to my brother for getting me closer to my problem. For once in my life (76 years) I let my guard down, although I do blame medical circumstances to a degree. Without this forum, I shudder to think of the financial outcome from Land Rover. Again my heartfelt thanks. Oh, bikes and me don’t get on, however thats another story.

Check with your man doing the rebuild that he has bottom end tightening torques, they're not published by JLR, but I have them somewhere for when he gets to that stage.

Thanks for the info. regarding torque settings Mike.

That brings to mind a local garage owner / engineer, now deceased, who joined the R.A.F. during WW II
spending all his service life working on R.R. Merlin and Griffon engines.
Critical bolts and studs were tensioned by material extension measured with micrometers and dial gauges, all Moore & Wright, which overcame any foreign bodies on the threads which would affect measured torque readings.
He had a M & W branded oak tool cabinet with the drawers lined with green baize and full of M & W products stamped with the WD arrow insignia.
A fount of engineering knowledge and very helpful in keeping my 1955 BSA C12 running in the early 1960's.
