All I want for Christmas..... is a new Engine

So, on Friday travelling home from work I felt a slight judder through the car and thought initially it was the road surface.

However I then found I could replicate the judder with a gentle bit of right foot, so here I am thinking 'Oh no, transfer case or diff'. I then heard a speed related slight knocking and by pulling up and gently revving the engine in neutral it soon became apparent that it was engine related. Censored

Arrived home and immediately pulled the filter to find the dreaded shiny glitter of bearing shells and so am assuming it's spun a main bearing?

Spoke to my MD parts mate today and he has advised that both short block and stripped engine options are not available with no ETA from the factory of when they will be back in stock.

I don't really want to go down the secondhand engine route and definitely not the reconditioned route, as who knows what you're buying with a secondhand engine and I don't trust recons as I believe the crank journals are line bored and matched to the crank? No bottom end genuine parts are available so I really don't have many options.

Car was main dealer serviced up until I bought it (20 months ago) and since then serviced every 5K by me with Castrol Edge C1 5W30 and all genuine filters etc.

So much for the famed reliability of the SDV8!!

My game plan is to pull the engine in the New Year (off skiing for 3 weeks next Monday) and then assess the damage and go from there (not being sure yet, where there is)!

Anyone suffered a similar fate and would like to chime in, then I'm all ears.

Off to have a read on Topix Big Cry L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.

That kind of concurs with what my MD parts mate was saying about buy backs. Obv. no use to me, but good to know. Do you have any reccomendations for builders, my only concern is, I do lots of miles (60K since I bought it), so reliability is no.1 on my list.

Many thanks L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.

and you bought a land rover ? ( Sorry ... I really couldn't resist Whistle )

Seriously though, I think your comment about assessing the damage is the most prudent in the first instance. Rip it out, strip it apart and see what is actually damaged, and take it from there.

A very quick glance around suggests that main bearings etc are available. V8 or else ...

Just remember what ever you decide to do, the main thing is you'll need to remove that swarf! The easy bit will be fixing the main problem. Leave just a small amount and you'll be back to square one in no time!

So, you may have seen im in exactly the same boat as you at the moment? My wife's 4.4TDV8 engine expired! Ive gone down the "Buy a crash damaged low milage RR" as all the second hand engines were £8k upwards and the rebuilders seamed super sketchy to me...

Good luck Thumbs Up

I stumbled across these on ebay earlier today. Might be a way to get an engine for sensible money.

Apologies for the late replies as I had "Chrsitmas committments" last night, not that I really feel in a Christmas mood!

Very many thanks to everyone for the replies thus far, at least it gives me some ideas to form a battle plan. I've chatted today with my MD parts mate and he is of the opinion in an un-official capacity that the engine will never be available again via LR as there has been no ETA for over 12 months and are also on restriced Vin, which concurs with what Phoenix says.

The Car had 90K on it when I bought it in 2021 and now 159K, I know it sounds a lot, but all of my miles are motorway up and down the UK and half a dozen times a year to the Southern French Alps, as all V8 owners know cruising at 85mph or 130Kmh is less than 1500rpm so not exactly working the engine.

I need to keep the car as it's worth more to me than it's book value with that mileage, I had intended (and still do) to run it for a good few years.

It's always been servied with genuine parts following the JLR work schedule re mileage and has only ever has Castrol Edge C1 oil, so I guess I'm just unlucky. Browsed all through Topix yesterday, checking all the TSB's etc. to see if there is any mention of bottom end issues etc. but nothing documented.

I've spoken to a few people who have alleged low mileage engines for sale on eBay and as soon as I ask for a Vin or reg to verify the mileage or service history they either don't reply or the engine is now sold etc. So, to me that means they either are lying about the mileage or the engine has a dubious past that they are trying to hide.

One seller offered me a complete Engine/box and all suspension/subframe assembly for £6K, apparently a 2018 low miler, however looking at the private pics he sent me I can clearly see the inlet manifold stub pipes are the early design (prone to splitting), so going by that it's more likley a 2013 unit as opposed to a 2018. I didn't either bother to challenge him, as what's the point, all trust lost at that point so move on!

Fortunately (or not) I have a L494 SDV6 to go on holiday in over Crhristmas as a backup (just praying that it doesn't do the dirty on me half way up a mountain). Once I'm back I plan to pull the engine and see the state of damage and then it's decision time. I'm in agreement with Phoenix, if I rebuild mine, as least it's a known quantity. As Cam Tech Craig said, the engine refurbishers all seem a shady bunch, don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are some good ones out there, but on the flip side everyone hears of rebuilt engines lasting a few K. Years ago I had my Porsche 997 rebuilt by a 'reputable firm', lasted less than 10k, idiots had used cast iron liners that soon span. Pulled it out, took it to Hartech and £14K later it was a better than new engine (still got it as a summer car now).

As soon as I start work on it, I'll be sure to take plenty of photos and keep you all updated on my journey! In the meantime, keep the thoughts and comments flowing!

Again, Many thanks all

David.

Not sure an engine from a RR that's been used as a stunt car and has a roll cage fitted is for me, probably not had the easiest of lives Rolling Eyes L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.
