Dropping out of first gear when cold?

Hi all,

Relatively new to me 2008 TDV8
When first driving off if I accelerate then take my foot off the gas, it feels as if the gearbox drops out of gear, and I hear a funny (not nice) whirring noise.

I'm assuming this is a gearbox problem. Could the gearbox be low on oil? It only happens when I first start and drive off, and maybe for 5 mins afterwards. After 5 mins of driving, its all OK.

I have just had all the fluids changed, engine, front/rear diff and transfer box but haven't had a gearbox service yet.

Not sure to be honest, I'm just really starting to listen for things if you know what I mean, I haven't driven it a lot yet. Lets assume it was....
Anybody had or hear of a gearbox issue with these symptoms? All the best

First check I would do is make sure oil level is correct in gbox.

RRphil is the guru on these gbox, he might pop in.

How many miles on it?
Any history of gbox oil change?

When the fluid is cold its high viscosity means it takes longer to return to the sump and, if the fluid level is low, the suction port in the filter may become uncovered allowing the pump to suck air momentarily. As dingg1 has already suggested, I would definitely check the fluid level first.

Thanks for the replies.

I agree, I'll get the level checked. Lifeguard 6 is the right oil I think is it? Or Ford Mercon SP? it does sound like something is sucking air....

150,000 miles and I don't know if the fluid has ever been changed...

I suppose the next question is where did the oil go??!!
