According to The Times, the 3G networks are being switched off, where does that leave those of us with only 3G modems in our cars?

What won’t we be able to do? What can we do to mitigate the problems?

I would have thought you just swap the SIM for another one?
The SIM in my car is a 5G EE SIM.
It’s the SIM which needs to be 4G or 5G, then you can receive and send data over the network.  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

He-he… I remember when those mobile comms companies were bidding billions to buy the licenses for the 3G network…and the government trousered about £22billion from the sale… for just a pice of paper allowing the frequency use…

It’s the modem that’s the problem, not the SIM.

I’ve done a bit of googling and some things we may lose are:

Remote services (I use these most days in winter to warm the car up and it’s useful when I forget to lock it)

Traffic on sat nav - I use CarPlay do not bothered about this

Over the air updates - don’t know if this means the end for these

One option would be to use a phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot and connect the vehicle to that - works on my17 vehicles. IIRC the telematics functions use 2G as a fall-back from 3G however that is also been retired by the end of 2033 although no dates for ending 2G services have been published.

3G dates:
Vodafone is starting its switch-off in early 2023
EE plans to start its switch-off in early 2024
Three expects to switch off by the end of 2024.4
Virgin Media (VM)-O2 has not yet announced its planned 3G switch-off date.

Looks like we will have to use our phones & bluetooth in the future. On a USA website article (Driver) Land Rover was among manufacturers who didn’t respond to their survey on what plans they had to update or adapt vehicles to use 4G or 5G retrospectively. Good old JLR being consistent again. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Well, I don't mind admitting that I'm still confused
How do you tell what does what with respect to the connectivity?
i.e. what relies on the SIM card, what relies on the modem, and what is done with wi-fi, and what is done with bluetooth, whether with the car connecting to terrestrial WiFi, or the car acting as a Wi-Fi hotspot, or OTA updates, etc?

Also, how to tell what hardware/compatibility any given vehicle is fitted with, e.g. my MY17 L405 has the updated Nav, so will it be 4G compatible?

There seem to be LTE devices which plug into the OBD port as well, not sure if these would be compatible with JLR systems, but I suppose when this becomes a huge problem, somebody will solve it, if they haven’t already?  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Noticed mine doesn't show 3G anymore just the 2G 'Edge'. Seems to do the online routing okay but a bit of a rip off paying EE for a 5G service.. 2017 Range Rover Vogue V6 Diesel

Update on 3G switch off dates:

Vodafone switch-off planned completion January 2024.
EE switch-off commenced January 2024, planned completion March 2024
Three plans to commence switch-off in April 2024 with completion by the end of 2024.
O2 planning to switch-off in 2025.

so is it worth updating all of the in control options then? What wont work in future? Mine expire tomorrow. First time FFRR owner
