I know they are usually very expensive, looking at Machinemart they range from £400 to £3000

However there are now some Chinese versions at around £100 - £!50 so I wondered if any one has any experience of these tools.

At that kind of money I would happily treat myself to one, you know, just in case I need one.

Can't comment on the cheap chinese versions, but I managed to pick up a Mini Ductor Venom via eBay, brand new for just over £300. Best thing I've ever bought, it does exactly what you need it to, localised heat to where you need it, bolts, nuts and studs are cherry red hot within a few seconds! Used it recently getting a retaining pin out of a Brembo 6 pot, pin was red hot in a few seconds and the alloy caliper just warm.

Interesting question, I'm in the same boat as you! I spent a miserable Sunday with a 2' breaker bar getting the lower strut bolts loose on an old 4.2 S/C..


I'm hoping the technology has improved/cheapened- I've even seen some "induction forges" lately so perhaps it's worthwhile.

If I push the button and buy one of the budget versions, I'll post on here!

The case for buying one is very strong for what they are capable of, but as I said I am put off on cost, so its nice to have a volunteer to report back to us!

If not then I may buy one anyway, if its not up to the job I can return it.

We've had one that cost around £600. It was a godsend whilst it worked but after 18 months of light use it went bang.

I've spoken to quite a few people selling them and they've advised that the cheaper ones do go bang regularly. The professional ones are cooled whereas the cheaper ones aren't and they overheat.

I will buy another one though as they are a fantastic piece of kit.

I can relate to that my wife loves her kitchen worktop single ring induction hob, the current one has lasted some 5 years now. However we went through quite a few which kept going bang, which I put down to cooling.

So I was hoping the automotive ones have gone through the same growing pains.
