RR 2014 rumbling noise

Hi all, hope you’re all well !

So, strange one this….
wondered if anyone has had a similar issue ever.
RR 4:4 sdv8 L405 2014 with 23” alloys.
When pulling off “fairly quickly” to the right (such as at a junction) there seems to be a what I can only describe as a rumble / knock from NSR.
Reminds me of cornering on a flat tyre and the tyre rolling 🤔
But, tyre pressure fine, no damage or blebs in tyre, had a lie down underneath and swung on every arm, joint, bar that’s there and all seems tight ????
Taking it to my mates garage tomoz to get on ramp but always open to advice !
Also it had a gearbox service last year at JAS landrover so I trust it’s been done right !

Any advice will be welcomed !

Thanks all

Not an uncommon issue.

Transfer case oil needs drained and refilled.
Then once refilled the transfer case clutch system needs recalibrated ( needs a diagnostic tool to initiate this ) for it to relearn the correct biting point.

You need to do the above process twice having taken it for a drive between each refill.

The noise you are hearing is the transfer case clutch pack slipping under load due it needing a service. The transfer case as well as being the high/low ratio gearbox also can lock up the front and rear props through a clutch pack system. (Basically a haldex style unit.

On pulling out of a junction like you describe in order to reduce wheel slip on the ground, the transfer case locks up … but this is at a time when your putting power through the system and all wheels are trying to turn at different speeds due to the corner turning, those rotational differences are too much for the worn clutch system, so it slips, re grips, slips, re grips causing a thudding feel as you pull away. V8 or else ...

What a fantastic explanation!

I’m somewhat disappointed that I need to do this again after only recently having a full gearbox service ?

Is this common ?

Don’t suppose there’s anyone mobile or local to Doncaster that can do this ?

The gearbox and transfer case are separate units so your gearbox won’t need redone.

Engine > Gearbox > Transfer box > front and rear diffs

Each have their own fluids and are serviced separately V8 or else ...

Hi mate, I rang a specialist LR garage up this afternoon, told them my problem and literally word for word they said exactly what you said !!!

It was uncanny!!

They have done this exact job twice today too !!!

Must be a common issue ?

I think if left unserviced, then its inevitable that the issue will show itself eventually under conditions where rotational difference between propshafts is the most ... which will most often be on a tight steering angle when power is going through drivetrain ... i.e. pulling out of junctions.

The average L405 is likely around 4-5 years old ... so around 50k miles ... if thats the average, then half them are likely to be older and higher mileage, and so reaching a point where oil fatigue and wear will show. So, yeah, its common.

That said, I reckon that as long as you service the oil when you notice it happening, or at some reasonable mileage frequency ( 40k - 50k miles ... ish ), then you're not really likely to burn out the clutches or damage them.

The rotational slip on the clutch pack is not going to be that much each time it slips and grabs. I.e. it not like clutch slip that blind missus miggins generates by riding the clutch in her wee suzuki going to the bridge club whilst she's holding the engine at the redline cause she refuses to get hearing aids. V8 or else ...

I literally don’t drive it
Been out three times in as many weeks so in honesty I’ll probably not drive it till the day I take it for the fix which is 10 days away !
I’m very grateful for your comments and hopefully she’ll be sweet as a nut again after the fix !!!
