Torque Converter Failure Symptoms

Hi all,

Can anybody give me a full list of symptoms that might indicate an impending torque converter failure?

I have read Daveo's post describing it as like "driving over a cattle grid at slow speed", however, whilst similar, my problem only seems to occur at crawl speed (i.e. when in drive but with no throttle input such as when manouvering in a car park) not the 30-40 mph that Daveo mentions.

I have also read on the forum that similar sounding symptoms have been traced to an injector problem. Possibly this but how to find out without extensive and expensive dealer time?

I was just wondering if there are any other symptoms that might help me identify the problem?

If it helps anybody diagnose, I also have another issue, which I am convinced is transmission related, which I can't seem to solve:

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic6221.html?highlight=

I have carried out a full flush of the gearbox (megaflush with 4-tech) as well as changing the front and rear diff and transfer box oils, which has not helped. BTW - all of the old oils were in pretty good condition. Have also replaced the gear control linkage mechanism (as recommended by Gazeillo).

Again, if it helps, as well as the:

1. Slow speed juddering
2. Vibration/droning noise when under load between 2,000 and 2,500 rpm (see above post). NB. this happens at any speed, always at the same point in the rev band, except when in neutral.
3. Jerky 1st to 2nd gear change (this was helped by the gearbox oil flush incidentally)

It also feels as if the car is not accelerating as readily as it used to - almost as if there is too much friction in the drivetrain somewhere. Perhaps linked to this, I have also noticed that I can no longer accelerate on motorways without the gearbox dropping down two gears. Previously I was always able to apply perhaps 25% throttle and generate mild acceleration without the 'box kicking down. No longer. Again this seems to indicate additional friction somewhere in the drivetrain.

I can't swear to it, but it also feels as if the steering is a bit heavier.

FYI - when it went for the trans oil flush, we noticed that a lot of grease had been forced out of the boot covering the linkage between the driveshaft and front left wheel, although the rubber boot itself was not split. This was refilled with grease and the "jubilee clip" tightened.

Car has now done 60,000 miles. All trans oils changed at 58,000.

Any help and recommendations VERY much appreciated as I am taking it to the south of France in two weeks time and really don't want a problem whilst over there!

Many thanks in anticipation!

Is it definately not a slight missfire? This will feel like a judder when creeping...

I suppose it could be, although I haven't noticed anything from the engine note. Confused

I did notice that somebody on the forum (adara) with a similar sounding issue seemed to cure it by replacing an injector:

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic2129.html?highlight=judder

Could it be a similar thing with mine? I have noticed a slight drop off in performance and fuel economy since it started happening.

How would I go about establishing whether this is the problem? Presumably some sort of diagnostic equipment. Is this a Landrover specific bit of kit or can any OBD kit interrogate the ECU sufficiently for this?

Many thanks Dan! Thumbs Up -----------------------------------------------

When my torque converter died it was kicking in and out around 2000 rpm (lockup?) and shooting up to 2300rpm and back again.

Then it must have broke up and ruined the gearbox(72000 miles) so please let a gearbox specialist have a look at it.

John

Thanks for the advice. Dropped it off at TAS (recommended to me as autogearbox gods) in Mersea.

Report due tomorrow.

Will post the results (pain!) when I hear back from them.

Until then.... nervous!

Suspect new box and torque converter on the way.... Crying or Very sad -----------------------------------------------

olders, what was the result of visiting the auto specialist??

I dont believe anyone else with a TDV8 has had transmission problems other than selector issues. Can't recall any torque convertors or gearboxes failing?

Misfires and turbo failures are more common on the TDV8's. These would give power issues.

Sorry! Been busy - haven't had a chance to post an update.

Took it to see TAS in West Mersea - great, honest service from very knowledgeable people, highly recommend them - and...

... good news... for now! Very Happy Verdict was that some of the symptoms may be indicative of very early signs of transmission wear, but nothing to worry about for now. Couldn't fault the torque converter. The only fault code that showed up after a full diagnostic was a fault with injector 8. This could easily explain the judder and I am fairly happy that this is the cause of that problem.

Will get it replaced if it happens again.

Will post any developments.

Thanks for all the advice and input - particularly RRPhil for his extremely helpful PM - will post here as may be of use to others. Thumbs Up -----------------------------------------------

Laughing Bl**dy hope not!! Don't fancy a new gearbox!

With stealers at the moment for new o/s cv joint gaiter, which has chucked out all it's grease. Should be fixed tomorrow.

Off to France again next week - can't wait - perfect job for a RR! Lots of miles this year!

Hope all is well.

I have the same issue ith my tdv8 ans zf6 gearbox... all checked with trassmision , when car is lifted and drive no symptoms when driving (additinal torque) its sporadical sound and vibration from accelerating pedal and front of the car....all oils changed , yestarday I update gearbox soft , symptoms change the place of appearance and thats all still exist. I have mentioned vibration and juddering at the rpm peak just before gear change.... and smth uhh which last few second when accelerating

Have you checked injectors using electronic tool or you technics remove it one by on to conduct flow test?
