Since my current VERY old L322 ( 2007!!) really has to be changed, I have been hunting for an 2017 onwards RR L405. I want petrol and those are seemingly rare in my neck of the woods.

Anyhow, one of the LR people I spoke to today primarily deals with maintenance & restoration interspersed with a very occasional sale. He didn’t have any cars for sale at the moment thus he had no bias.

He implored me to ONLY buy a L405 through an offical LR dealer as this model …..and I quote…”was beset by endless engine issues”.

Since I clearly keep my cars as long as my pets I’m not au fait what is happening with RR. I had a P38 for 10 years, a previous L322 for 11 years and my current one for 12 years. All good, reliable cars.

Is there merit to this guy’s notion? Is the L405 a headache to own? Or should certain construction years of this model be avoided?

he may be referring to the v6 issues that are widely reported to having crankshaft breakages.

There is lots of anecdotal evidence to support this bit there are plenty of v6 owners who have had no issues.

As far as I am aware, the v8 diesel and petrol engines of this age are largely reliable. First time FFRR owner

My understanding is that the 5.0SC engine in the L405s is generally reliable. Mine (Jan 18, 67,000 miles, serviced to LR schedule) has had no engine problems. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Wouldn’t someone who deals with maintenance and restoration, by definition be more prone to coming across problems?

Anyway, 9 year old, 37000 miles 5.0sc no problems.

I have done 160k on a 5.0 supercharge and as long as you look after it its bomb proof, still going strong. I suspect he is referring to diesels in his comments.

Even the diesel V8's are very reliable if looked after. Lots of short trips can increase the oil dilution but this can easily be managed with more regular oil changes which are easy and relatively cheap to do yourself.  _______________________________________________
