New Alternator - 3.6 TDV8

Hi - My alternator needs replacing. Only showing 8.7 volts on ticjk over and 12.7 when I give it high revs. Quoted £600 from RR dealer. Any comments or suggestions ? Should I go to bills alternators instead or am I likley to be heading to a world of hurt ? Also anyone elses alternator gone aftern only 49,000 miles ?

Thanks

I had one go on me about 12 months ago. Fortunately under warranty but be prepared for 5 hours labour to fit the thing. It comes out from the front which means radiator out, coolant drained, and lots of other scarey looking bits being removed. The actual alternator itself wasn't that expensive as I recall though, just the sheer amount of time to fit the thing.

Who's diagnosed the alternator being dead? I'm not 100% but I'm sure I've read on here that the charging system on our cars is very clever and varies the voltage depending on what the car needs. So maybe on tick over your alt might only need to produce 6v to keep the system happy but when reved needs more. There control system is more than the average car. I would have thought it should last more than 49k miles. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

should be around 14 volts when on idle and not much change when revved up..

Guava Godalming changed mine under warranty 2 months ago and billed £470, to Land Rover , however that may not be what Joe public pays. 2018 Range Rover Autobiography
