United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.2 SC V8 Zambezi Silver
blue smoke on cold start but only some times

hi
im really struggling with my 4.2 supercharger Sad
its a 2006 with 69K on the miles and full service history

im getting blue smoke on random occasions only on cold starts, i just cant get to the bottom of it.

i have changed the pcv ( 3 times with genuine LR part )
breather pipe from pcv to throttle body been replaced
breather pipe from air intake to rocker cover replaced
Mass air flow been changed
new air filter
new set of spark plugs
oil and filter change
all parts i have replaced are genuine LR

i have took it to 3 LR specialist but no real joy

i have removed the throttle body a few times and every time there has been a pool of oil in the bottom where the pcv pipe joins,
im guessing that i have a crankcase pressure that is clogging the pcv and allowing oil to pass to the throttle body
iv looked at the breather pipes and vacuum pipes around the top of the engine but failed to find any faults.

is there any internal breather pipes or anything internal that can be blocked?

any help would be great

kind regards
billy

it is totally random and there is no pattern to it, some times i can go 4 or 5 days without smoke and then get 2 or 3 days with smoke, the amount of smoke is complete random as well, some times i can just about see it then some times it covers the street ,
only ever does it on cold start , never does it when warm or driving

iv seen a few people with this problem and they change the pcv vale 2 times and change the breather pipe and it sorts it but i dont undrstad why it takes 2 pcvs to get it sorted?
im on my 3rd pcv but iv not swapped them straight after each other , might of had a 6 month gap before iv replaced it again
from what i gather the other people change there pcv with in a few days of each other or a week,
just cant see why it would make a difference?

Hopefully someone who has had similar will be along shortly, if not it sounds like you need a good independent garage to take a look...

Good luck Thumbs Up Pete

yeh iv had 3 local independent LR garages look at it but they just dont listen,

i get the feeling i know more than them Confused
they all just want to hook it up to diagnosis and throw parts at it.

is there any 1 in england that know the 4.2 supercharger engine inside out?
i bought this car to enjoy and didnt really want to do all the work on it as i dont get much time to my self.

Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

feeling deflated

My 4.4 na does it when I've had the revs up around 5000 revs in the morning, on start up in the evening i sometimes get the same, it just wafts out with no force.

You will probably find more info on the Jaguar forums over here and the US forums for the RR as it was far more common over there... Thumbs Up Pete

Good morning, how did the situation develop with your problem? Was it successfully resolved? I have the same thing in my 4.2sc in my Jaguar and I have not found an answer anywhere on the forums, the steps I did the same as you.

All the usual will apply the SC isn't that different in that respect from other petrol motors, blue smoke is most likely oil finding it's way into the cylinders.

Valve guides or valve guide seals, rings, scored bores, internal supercharger seals. The fact that you appear to be getting excess crankcase pressure points to the above.

I know 69k miles is not a lot, but high crankcase pressure and blue smoke, I'd say scored bores or bad rings 1st stop. You didn't say what condition your spark plugs were in, heavily coked on 1 cylinder ?

The fact it does it on first start up could mean you have a very small bypass issue, in that oil is draining into the bores while idle, that gets kicked out when you first start, hence the blue smoke on start but not enough to cause a smoke trail in normal running.

I'd advise getting a compression check done and an endoscope of the bores in the first instance just to eliminate those, something could well be on it's way out.

Temporarily remove the PCV pipe from the throttle connector (and seal the TB connection ) and let it vent to the air or into a 'catch can' . If this fixes it you can narrow your diagnostics to the PCV system. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

In my case it is that it is the oil typically from the PCV system through the pipe that collects in the throttle elbow. Compression checked, after 12b evenly, plugs new, at full load the streak does not leave, collects oil when driving calmly and at idle. PCV valve replaced with original but I think I will repeat this action and certainly install Oil Catch Tank on this tube, I will see what amounts of this oil will collect.
