Ive just purchased a Mk4 BMW sat nav from a gentleman on ebay

Sounds like a iffy unit, what condition is the plug like on the rear of the unit?? |

That was my first thought, but the plug is clean and dry |

Now that its dark. I can seen the screen does light up, but just a dull grey light with no symbols

Do a YouTube video showing the connect up and turn on starting at the plug in of the mk4 to the front screen and give a running commentary and then do the same with the mk3

The vids will prove ur case also do explain why u were upgrading ur benifits etc so they know why u was doin it so they don't think ur loosibg the plot swapping it out |

Having a long background in owning BMW's I can assure you that these units are prone to damage if they are powered up and either the cables to it, or the battery disconnected before being allowed to power down normally fries the main board which can be replaced |

There are repairers around, just use google to find them, there are a lot! |

The only thing with the V32 upgrade is that ur gonna need a display to see that the update is working |

As Cliffy says, you will need a screen to see the update, however It is automated from what I can remember. If you have downloaded a BMW version of the V32 code, you will end up with a BMW logo on your start up screen, but this can be changed by editing the files on the CD |
