Knocking sound and still scratching heads! | |
I have trawled the site and searched the threads with the vagaries of "knocking sound" I am not unfamiliar with D3 and FFRR issues I thought I might find a starter on the site that may help. Something that may be a cause of my woes now and typical on March 2016 L405 cars.
I have just added a 2016 L405 to my garage this time 4.4L SDV8, the story goes like this, I buy probably 2 no. cars a year from Copart so I am familiar with most of the risks, I bought unseen a Copart 'special' here with one key and no superficial bodywork damage, it looks good with fairly low miles on 65k so I was expecting something of a problem lurking within the car. At least if it looks too good etc. then it might be/is too good to be true. I know most things are fixable,so have set money aside, however there is a front passenger side knocking that I cannot establish what it is just yet. I know I will get a few pointers off this site!
The first examination and attempt to solve the problem established someone else has had a go and brutalised the hub getting to the drive shaft which because of some play we thought was the subject of the noise and we have replaced OEM. No success here!
It is a rotational and directional noise. The geometry seems fine and 'we' (there is always a collection of head scratchers) found our analysis is wrong. On reassembly the knocking is still present noticeable when on the move and turning right.
We now are suspicious of the front differential but question if it would fail after 65k. The oil was black upon changing and no noticeable difference in the knocking issue. Are we right to suspect differential failure and is there any other known issues in the front suspension?
I would like to think we have checked the obvious but all comments and pointers appreciated.
