I don't know why people have to negotiate in public - is it just to show how clever they are?

My exchanges with gapDiagnostics have all been in private by e-mail unless I am explaining their product to a wider audience, as I have got one, am a beta tester (and know what that means) and people are generally interested as they haven't yet committed - I feel I should.

Clearly there is some useful info in the post, but as for the insisting on a refund SteveFR standing up as a lawyer Graham responding by attaching timescales - Yawn

...........mmmmm did I get out of the wrong side this morning and haven't yet taken my pills Very Happy Geoff

No, I think that's my problem....! Just grumpy is all. Fair point.

The thread is useful generally, and tbf I have mostly been emailing the Gap Diagnostics guys. Graham

So do we! Then we'd have eliminated them. (JK)

We now have the website up. If you go to http://gap-diagnostic.com/products/iidtool.html and scroll down, you can enter your vehicle type and there is an interactive, pop up chart showing exactly which modules are not yet finished. This doesn't mean that they are not present at all - just unconfirmed as in the case of your FBH. The problem is that we don't have access to all vehicles all the time to test changes in the FW (try to get hold of a RR with electric running boards...). With the later L322 we have 30 out of 37 possible systems confirmed including all that are vital to vehicle operation. Missing are some 'comfort' and accessory items that we don't have easy access to.

We resolved one issue in the past by sending the beta user modified FW which he then loaded to the IIDTool and tried. The problem was resolved on the first attempt (timing issue on the comms IIRC).

This is one of the reasons we have betas - and one reason we prefer betas with a bit of IT/auto knowledge to assist us in finding and, if necessary, working through problems.

Just as an aside: the development time for the IIDTool has been incredibly short. Less than a year ago it didn't even exist in concept! Christian and Patrick had developed the original EASControl which was piggy-backed to the wiring harness and allowed hight changes to be made to the EAS. In a period of roughly 9-10 months, this simple device was changed to an OBD plug-in module and diagnostic capability added. Given the same amount of time additionally, we expect the system to be complete meaning all modules/systems covered with programming/initialization/live data/component testing. About the only thing missing will be the ability to flash new ECUs.

@SteveMFr

Been on the Britpart web site.....Am I right in thinking that the IID Tool is past the beta stage and is now for sale?
I would have jumped on board earlier but as you say above:-

"we prefer betas with a bit of IT/auto knowledge to assist us in finding and, if necessary, working through problems."

This counts me out Big Cry

Hi Bob,
Yes, the IIDTool is available in a production version. There is more info on our site as well as a chart showing functionality for specific vehicles one you've clicked on your model/year.

http://gap-diagnostic.com/home.html

We don't have full functionality implemented yet, in its present form it's basically a fault code read/clear tool (and already competitively priced for that) with full capability only available for the EAS (meaning: viewing live data, manual activation of components for troubleshooting, programming). Full functionality is planned to be implemented by the 3rd quarter of 2012.

We will be adding functionality in several stages over the next months as we finish new SW modules. The update process is very easy: download and save an EXE file from our website, plug the IIDTool into the computer with a standard USB>microUSB cable, and click the EXE file. The program finds the IIDTool and loads itself without the user having to do anything. Makes updating a smartphone seem complex Razz

I should have added that while "we prefer betas with a bit of IT/auto knowledge to assist us in finding and, if necessary, working through problems.", we are also very happy to have less knowledgeable beta testers on board to make sure our products are truly safe and easy to use. As a matter of fact, we did have one minor bug turn up about 4-5 months ago because a beta did several things none of us had ever envisioned anyone doing and also managed to find a combination of buttons that had to be pressed within a 0.2-0.3 second time frame... Took a while to re-construct that.

Just a thought Steve - does the .EXE file updater require Windows, or does it work on Mac as well ...? Graham

think .exe is the clue.

I'm sure the guys at GAP will have a Mac version, or at least you can use DOSBox or crossover.

Windows at the moment...
One thing after another. We have many things to get done.

We're hoping the Mac users will have Bootcamp or Parallels. Whistle

I'll test it on my Mac anyway, running win 7 through bootcamp or parallels or even a dos window. Won't be a problem Rolling Eyes
When's it ready anyway? Geoff

Betas will get notification of a small update - mainly just the Service Interval Reset (all except 02-05 RR which is done with the trip odo buttons) - in the coming days. This is to verify the updating procedure, mainly. There'll be an update shortly after which will take care of all (most?) missing systems - such as Graham's FBH. Then, on the heels of that will be the autumn update- in the middle of winter. Mad
