Gear box behavior.

Hello, I am new to this world of RR. I have a question regarding the gear box on my L322 3.6 TDV8 2008.
I notice that when driving in D and moving over to sport, at low speed, the display always shows it in 5. Shifting down sends it to 2! Shifting up goes through all the gears and it generally drives fine. At higher speed (with butt clenched) it doesn’t shift from 5 to 2!
Could anyone shed some light on what might be causing this? It doesn’t seem normal to me.
I will probably do a service on the gear box, as it’s done 130k with no record of a service, but some general knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Are you sure its a "5" or could it be "S" ?

My 2007MY car only ever indicates "S" on selecting Sport mode, then indicates the actual gear if the gear selector is used to manually go up & down gears.

Pawl has hit the nail on the head I'd say. On my 2012 if I move from regular drive to sport its an S that comes up on the dash, it only then display S4, S5, S6 etc as I use the paddle shift to move the gears up and down.

The 2012 dash is different than earlier models but I would presume it would be a similar set up. Current yokes
