Hi - new to the forum!

I am looking at buying my first RR (I have previously owned Discos and Freelanders) and I am coming from a BMW X5 M50d. I really would like a 5.0 SC as petrol really suits my use of the car (short trips mainly).

I have seen a 2017 5.0 SC but it has 95,000 miles on the clock - it has a full LR service history and the car itself is in excellent condition but am I just looking at a bucket load of trouble with such a high mileage? I am used to hefty bills (the X5 has had its expensive moments!) but I would I am unsure how reliable these engines are generally?

Any advice would be great appreciated!

The engines don’t tend to give much trouble as far as I’m aware. I just sold my XFR on 89k. The only thing I had done was the coupler/snout on the supercharger replaced as it started rattling.

Water pump failure is reasonably common on the 5.0 as they start weeping around the shaft, I didn’t have this done on mine though.

You’ll read of issues with timing chain guides, this was on the earlier cars and there were revised guides fitted from 2013 onwards so a 2017 car will be fine from that point of view.

Plastic pipes do go brittle but unless they’re being disturbed whilst other jobs are done they should be ok.

I’d buy it Some of the best cars I’ve owned have been higher mileage as they just don’t like sitting around not being used much.

Nothing wrong with that mileage, as David says, better a car that's used as one that sits around, I have bought hundreds of cars over the years and the two that stand out as "failures" we both low milage and not used....

The 5.0 S/C is a Ford engine and they are known to last over 300,000 miles...

The only issue with the 5.0 S/C is the length you will keep your licence, the power is addictive...  Pete

I’d agree with everything above, I’ve had several L405 5.0 SC’s with around that mileage and from a reliability perspective, had no issues whatsoever with any of them

The only thing I would flag is the incidence of the front knuckle joint cracking that seems to be rearing it’s head, although a later car is supposedly outside the VIN range of affected vehicles according to LR.

I’d still take a close look at the joint on both sides to satisfy yourself theres no sign of any failure starting to appear. Search the forum and you’ll find threads including pictures of what to look for  Jonathan

Nope, definitely not mad, they're a cracking engine and car whether in an L322 or L405.

But its not just the guides and the arm behind which was supposed to have a hardened button on the back of it post 2013, a tensioner can go bad at anytime.

As long its got regular servicing and regular, quality oil changes and is nice and quite at startup from cold.

A 5.0 V8 SC RR is a bucket list car for me and whilst the X5 M50d was as fast there is just something the big RR has that no other SUV has.

Somebody once said to me, one day, you'll buy an X5 and either a Sport or FFRR will pull up next to you, you'll look at it and think I wished I'd bought one of those instead.

Yes, they need good and regular maintenance, but what doesn't, but nothing else drives or feels like a Range Rover.

I have a 2013 with 174,000 km. Mostly maintenance issues. Some repairs, the big ones covered by my 4 yr/80,000 km extended warranty that cost me $3,500 CAD). You will need cash. This isn’t a Toyota. It also gives me a smile EVERY TIME I drive it. I completed all the work myself except for the warranty items and transmission fluid change (due to vacation timing).

Spark plugs, water pump, crossover pipes completed by previous owner (new crossover pipes when valve cover leak fixed).





Vacuum pump replacement (eBay for $200)
RH valve cover leak dripping onto the serpentine belt and into the alternator ($5,000 warranty)
Rear main seal leak ($1,500 warranty)
Oil level sensor leak ($400 warranty)
Front and rear sway bar bushings (OEM)
Front and rear sway bar end links (OEM)
Front lower control arms and thrust arms (OEM)
Front and rear brake discs, pads, and sensors (Brembo/Bosch/Pagid)
Engine mount replacement, LH ripped (OEM)
RSE module replacement (eBay for $120)
DVD player (NAV unit) failure (eBay for $220)
Camshaft sensor o-rings (parts store for $20)
Start/stop button letter worn off (eBay for $80)

Transmission filter and fluid change
Transfer case fluid change
Front and rear differential fluid change

Tow hitch cover due to previous owner backing into a trailer hitch

Well officially joined the club today! Picked up my 2017 RR 5.0 SC today.

Very different animal to my BMW X5 M50d, power delivery much more subtle than the sledgehammer approach of the X5, ride much softer and luxurious and just a totally different vibe inside, much more luxury and refinement (except for the infotainment which is not quite as slick). Overall very happy, one issue is I cannot add the car to my InControl account as a previous owner has it still attached to theirs so need to figure out how to remove them.

I believe the supplying dealer needs to sort the InControl. If you didn’t buy it from a main dealer then you’ll need the logbook and a visit to your local dealer as far as I’m aware.

Hi - it’s been absolutely brilliant, I had the car serviced immediately by the local main dealer and put new tyres (it had Chinese ones and I wanted some decent branded ones). Besides from that the car has been great, done some longer trips and it hasn’t missed a beat. I can’t pretend it’s cheap to run but you won’t care too much when you drive it.

I have found the 5.0 SC quite placid when you want to just take it easy but the few times I have let the car stretch it legs properly it hasn’t disappointed at all!

My only real gripe is the electronics can have a mind of their own (Apple car play works when it wants to, not when I want it to!).

Overall no regrets
