You've suggested yourself what I was going to say! They come out much easier from a hot cylinder head than a cold one.
If really stubborn, you could try a small squirt of penetrating oil down the spark plug hole, but only once they're cracked off half a turn. Pen oil won't be any good, unless you've got them slightly started due to the gas tight seal formed by the plugs' washer!
If they start but get very tight on way out, try the pen oil, but also work the plug in and out, don't just carry on getting it out, go back and forth, that can save the threads being punished too much.
