A Rolls Royce Impulse Buy

My teenage daughter, who is becoming a petrolhead, has been bugging me for a while to get a second car, maybe an old Rolls or something American with fins. So I was on Instagram, as you do, and this popped up.

So home it came (sans that plate). 74k miles, decent history in a huge box file, even old tax discs someone was so meticulous. It lived in a dehumidified garage, and is 1982 so tax-free. I am thinking I might play with it for a month or two till the novelty wears off, then maybe October time, list it for sale.

It had a blow on the exhaust that was easily fixed, nothing else seems wrong with it.

They're a lot of toy for not a lot of money, as long as nothing serious goes wrong with it while I have it, it'll be fine. If something does, it might be the worst thing I ever bought. Rolling with laughter 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

Majestic and I fancy one too but may be younger Anarge era as they can be had for surprisingly reasonable money.
Whistle I think she would let me keep it in divorce settlement

Hi, they're very much like the L322 in that almost everything is available through the used spares market.

When they go off to the yard in the sky they're stripped and stored, barely anything gets truly scrapped.

Since the Silver Shadow the bodies were were done by Pressed Steel Fisher so even panels are interchangeable, unfortunately for that very same reason, they do tend to rot.

If your handy with the spanners and have somewhere to keep it, best of luck and enjoy. See if you can't get the Mrs to drive so you can relax in the back with a nice brandy or picking you up from the pub.

Wales 2019 Range Rover SVAutobiography 5.0 SC V8 Santorini Black

I had an itch a couple of years ago and bought this. I know they cause a little division regarding looks but it has been a dream to own and take away a couple of times a year the last being the battlements in Normandy and beaches which my Dad was involved in 80yrs ago. It turns out to be the most economical car I own Laughing always seeming to averaging 27mpg on 1000+ mile jolly’s.

Spotted this on eBay earlier, someone upgrading the front end to the new shape RR for £24k. Really just really.

Yes, it came from Flying Spares, a Rolls Royce breakers and spares company. I never saw so many of them in one place and in various stages of dismantlement. Looks like they have everything. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

Could this make them the most truly eco-friendly vehicle around still? When you look at how modern cars are almost disposable assets surely the fact there’s still these sorts of cars around is to be encouraged and celebrated.

It’s a shame really that older cars are not incentivised in the road tax system to help prolong the life cycle of such vehicles.

They are, this is tax-free as there's a rolling 40-year exemption, and this car is now 42. You don't have to have them MOTd either, although people tend to. I have an "Any car" insurance policy, so tax, MOT and insurance is £0.

IIRC, aren't cars like this exempt from all the congestion and ULEZ nonsense in London? 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

Hi, yes sorry should have been clearer as I have a couple of 40+ year old cars myself - I suppose I meant if you take something like my 2007 L322 there’s a lot of people would consider getting rid when it comes to the £700 per year road tax - at 17 years old these types of cars will end up one of two ways - if they have owners willing to spend what they need then this too could one day end up being a “classic” - if not they are destined for the crusher

I’m seeing you more as Elton John in his Corniche convertible, wearing a straw boater and dancing with Bruno Tonioli on the beach Stan Whistle
