Vehicle Inspections

Hi all

was wondering if anyone had any experience of this.

As you may have read I am after an L322 4.4V8 and have potentially found 2 from traders that may fit my bill. As I am an AA member i can get an inspection a bit cheaper (around£300 Sad ) but having read reviews on these and also RAC inspections a lot of responses seem to be take it to main dealer to check as we cant comment. So rather than do this i was wondering if there would be any benefit in having a local RR specialist inspect the vehicle. Spoke to one this am and they charge around £80 plus VAT inc diagnostic check. He said they check most stuff the big guys would only thing they dont do is drain the oil and anylise it. This is obviously cheaper and maybe better as they deal with these day in day out whereas AA/RAC have all makes to cover?

Let me know your thoughts or could you recommend a local specialist in North London or nearby.

PS vehicle is covered BY RAC warranty has anyone had any experience of this eg if you do your own servicing and not done by main dealer would they still pay out?

Cheers

Have a word with site sponsors Lookers Park Royal and see if they could help you out, as they are in London.

Bit far to go for a FFRR from Lancs, none about up North?

just spoken to Lookers Park Royal

they could do it if I took it to them for £250 also spoken to independant in London who charge £100 seem to check for similar things from what they have said. Think I would have to take the vehicle to them dont think it would be normal practice for the trader to take it over to them would it? bit difficult as i would need to get insured on something i may not buy if it turns out to be a pig ! I have fully comp on my car but think it only covers me on other cars if that particular vehicle is insured

Bought a freeloader with an RAC warranty once. When the wiper linkage broke we thought it would be covered as they list "wipers" as covered systems. Unfortunately they mean wiper "motor" in this so we had to pay.

I've looked at the AA & RAC breakdown warranty, they insist the car is serviced every X regardless of manufacturer specified interval, or like our service indicator. If it has missed any service in its history they they wont pay. They also don't count home servicing!

Any warranty other than manufacturers is an "insurance backed" warranty. We all know the game with insurance. They never want to pay.

I had a warrantywise warranty on my first L322, it was an "exclusion-less" warranty. The list of things not covered was amazing. Coolant level sensor, header tank, water pump, steering column motor failure - all refused to pay out for. Of course you cant use the car whilst they take a week to reply to your claim, which must be in writing. If you don't get the worth authorised by them then even if it is a legit claim they wont pay out!

Basically, put the money in the bank.

cheers Dan that's past experience! but if the dealer gives me say 3 months warranty with it via RAC and something goes wrong that IS covered will I have to go all the way back to London to have it fixed or could it go into a dealer/place of approved work by them to get it done, never had to claim on a warranty before dont want to after this either and they probably wouldnt pay out as im having it converted to LPG anyway so if the wiper motor brok they would say it was as a result of this !!

In theory you could get the work done anywhere - if they approve it. Thumbs Up

Its a long way to go for a "troublesom" breed. I got mine from a dealer in Burnley (80miles from me) and when i had problems it was a ball ache doing anything as they were a while away and their warrenty was basicly as Dan said an insurance policy. I never had to use it in anger but did call them to ask about stuff and they didnt instill confidence in me. The flip side was the indy garage who i could take it to if work was authorised didnt want to touch it as they hardly get paid out etc or its a pain for them to get paid out. They wanted money for the work from me then, me to claim the money back. Ball ache!

I would buy one from somewhere local and look private. Bide you time and keep looking, read on here and get clue up on all the little niggles. Most things electric etc you can check on yourself and most garage can do the basic chasis and engine checks. If you know where your going someone might me local with more experiance and be able to help you look over the car.

If I did it again thats what i would do. I rushed a bit as i had a trade in and thought the cover of a warrenty was the best thing going. It wasnt!

its down to gut feeling...you can get the car checked out by the AA/RAC etc and all can be A1 but two weeks into ownership and something might go wrong...i reckon if you 'feel' that the car is ok then hopefully it will be ..

I'm getting an inspection done. The AA just back this off to another company called Dekra (https://www.dekra-expert.co.uk/) which are only £250, so it might be worth cutting out the middle man.

Thanks for the help still think an inspection at dealers maybe better eg lookers as they deal with them day in day out this co could be something similar to AA but they may not know the vehicles all that well not sure
