L405 Handbrake Woes

Hi Guys

My father has treated himself to an L405 (2014) , (we are both in the motortrade) and I have took on the task of tickling it up for him. (currently using a 2011 RRS myself Embarassed )

Firstly it keeps going into "restricted performance/Limp" --- pull the engine cover off, see one side of the inlet all wet, done a smoke test, and its got a cracked inlet manifold. No problem, done a few before on RRS's

Now, the handbrake. The offside rear caliper was leaking badly, so badly there was barely a brake pedal, Changed the caliper, and a new handbrake motor (admittedly a chinesium one as thats whats on the other side) But the handbrake wouldnt do anything at all, just kept showing up handbrake motor codes, module codes etc....

Changed the module for a used one off a popular auction site (both have all the EXACT numbers) , and its sprung into life. Flashing red handbrake light gone off, handbrake working spot on.
HOWEVER, it has a fault code which my Autel is showing as U3000-78 - Control Module.
It wont clear, and I can only presume that because the chassis number in the used module doesnt match the car, it wont speak to it (a bit like when i fall out with the mrs)

Is it a matter of Re-Programming the chassis number in the new (used) module, with a diagnostic capable of it, or is it possible the new(used) module is Knackered ?? Has someone plug and played with one before ?

Any help or pointers would be appreciated as its quite frustrating having fitted new discs, pads, used caliper, bled everything up and then hit this stumbling block

Smile

As far as I am aware handbrake motors are not coded, I've changed several over the years and never had an issue, albeit I fitted genuine items. Never seen any codes from them once replaced. L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.

If you replaced control module used from different car um afraid this fault will be still present. You can try to refresh module with your own vin number but it is 50/50 success as majority of the modules can be only done it ones since new.
I recon if it works then just let it do it job.

Correction for my reply. I just remembered that once I
I saw this in l322 and simple adaptation in sdd made it work again. Module was original with correct settings

As per 4RRS, I’ve changed the motors on mine before, but you do have to put the handbrake into service mode before swapping out, did you do that? Maybe if you put back into service mode then re-initiate, all may be OK? I don’t think they are coded at all. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Is the error coming up under the parking brake section on the diagnostic tool? Cause it apparently relates to the blind spot mirrors:

U3000-78
Control Module - Alignment or adjustment incorrect Left/right blindspot monitoring control module
incorrectly installed Left/right blindspot monitoring control module internal failure

NOTE:
If the DTC is cleared, a test drive of at least 40 minutes duration is required in order to confirm that
the fault is rectified (the DTC will not set again prior to this interval)
Check the left/right blindspot monitoring control module for correct installation Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, clear the DTCs and retest. If the fault persists, install a new left/right blindspot monitoring control module. V8 or else ...

The potential problem could be to read code number with 3rd party device, which can have different list of faults in the system.
U3000 technically internal error but could happen because of wrong installation of motors as Gremlin500 mentioned or already damaged ecu.
I always trying to unplug newly installed item to see difference. Then looking further.
As an example active dynamics system on l322 throw the u3000 for internal error when installed after market shocks. Fault was intermittent and popped up without any sequence. While unplugged u3000 dissappear but circuit short to ground fault on both sides. Shocks replacement fixed the problem.

Whilst I can understand that error code <> description associations might vary between devices, vehicles and manufacturers, ( and potentially could be wrong associations ) I find it hard to believe that the actual error code value that Rallyman's Autel is reporting back is wrong.

If the Autel is reporting back U3000-78 ... then thats what the car will be reporting back. Autel isn't going to read a number back from the car and change it to a different value when it displays it to the user ( or at least I would be extremely surprised if it did ).

Which is why I asked whether the U3000-78 code is being listed under any particular heading within the Autel tool. For example, does the Autel report :

ERROR CODES:
Engine
 - no codes
Transmission
 - Pxxxx-xx
 - Pzzzz-zz
Body Control
 - no codes
ABS / Brakes
 - U3000-78

or does it just list it some sort of order without headings:

ERROR CODES
Pxxxx-xx
Pzzzz-zz
U3000-78

If it's the first one, then I can see why pursuing the brake ecu is worth considering.

If its the second one, then its possible that the U3000-78 error is not related to the handbrake problem at all, and Rallyman has made an assumption that because most of the errors appeared related to the handbrake and most cleared when he changed the ECU, then all the errors were handbrake related.

In reality, he could realistically have 2 sets of issues to deal with. The handbrake (which he himself has said appears to be working), and the blindspot sensors.

It's clearly a 2nd hand vehicle which has so far needed a bit of fettling so its not outset the realms of possibility that parts have been replaced / changed and have affected the blindspot monitoring.

The workshop manual comments :

Quote:
The BMCM carries out an auto-alignment self-check every time when in use,
this procedure can take up to an hour in some environments, however the
operation of the blindspot monitoring system will continue to operate as
normal.

And in the error code comments, U3000-78 it mentioned 40 mins.

Has the car been driven for an hour yet to let it do a full auto alignment ?

Which is why I ask about whether the errors are categorised on the Autel. V8 or else ...

What is my personal thought is that the blindspot system is not related to the parking module. So conclusion: fault is in different module or fault has different code. As I said and others also, replacement of the parking motors can't trigger this fault unless they are already not working. To replace parking module from different car won't trigger on dash fault only fault wrong vin or associated with this faults. BUT module WILL work as it should(checked few times with different components) and will keep fault appearing in sdd in dtc.
I would say new used module needs to be installed and tried as well as coding performed to try to get rid of wrong vin fault.
But again wrong vin is not a reason for the module to NOT do its job.

Also from my personal experience Chinese stuff doesn't want to work on this vehicles very occasionally it might work but not long. And I doubt so anybody of us will treat father's car with this s**ty stuff IMHO.
