How to: Retrofit Traffic Sign Recognition to Vogue spec L405

Before you start, visit the Wiki above and print off the WM sheets re “IMAGE PROCESSING CONTROL MODULE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION”.

You will need to source the correct IPMA/Camera unit for the upgrade, see below.

*** DISCONNECT THE VEHICLE BATTERY ***

Using plastic trim tools, prise down the lower camera housing behind the rear view mirror, there are 4 clips, it should pop off easily. Then using a small flat blade screwdriver prise open the 2 grey hinged metal clips holding the mirror, slide the mirror down & towards the screen to remove and unplug the grey plug to remove the mirror. Next prise down the fan housing, again it will pop off easily, unplug the green plug & remove the housing.
You will see the grey metal camera body, held in place by 4 clips, two front, and two (quite flimsy) clips at the rear, there are two metal prongs behind the camera (towards the screen) and two large pins locating the front corners L&R.
First, unplug the camera electrical plug, there is a release tab on TOP of the plug which is impossible to see, I used a small Allen key to pull down the tab, at the same time using a small trim tool in the back of the RH side of the plug to gently prise the plug out. Take care, many fine pins! Try not to angle the plug.
I then used two very small trim tools to hold open the 2 rear camera catches, whilst pushing the two front catch buttons upwards to release the camera; you may need to use a trim tool/screwdriver to get those 2 big front pins over the hooks both sides, they’re very tight, go carefully!
The camera will come loose all of a sudden, be ready to grab it.
Thankfully, installation of the new camera is much easier in reverse, making sure all the plugs and clips are properly latched, to avoid rattles.
*** RECONNECT BATTERY ***

I fitted the camera/IPMA unit "HPLA-19H406-Bx" marked "PREMIUM", in place of the unit "HPLA-19H406-Ax" "ENHANCED", and amended the CCF using the iiD BT G3 tool as follows:

EUCD-098 - Lane Departure Warning = LDW Fitted with Enable Menu & TSR Fitted with Overspeed
MultiCAN-498 LaneKeepAssistLKA = LKA Fitted
EUCD-026 Power Steering Type = Electric Power Steering with external angle and torque control = Fitted
Then run Routine: Service/Test>IPMA-Image Processing Module 'A'>Allow Central Data Configuration Learning.

System works 100% as it should, Menus are present and configurable for speed & sensitivity, system "sees" traffic signs and issues the appropriate warnings.

It’s important to get the right camera (IPMA Image Processing Module ‘A’)
(EU/UK market only)
All are marked “HPLA-19H406-**” but the last 2 (**) characters are significant:
The “-Ax” ENHANCED units only have LDW, but can be activated in the CCF for AHBA ((Auto High Beam Assist).
The “-Bx” PREMIUM units have the full LDW/AHBA/TSR with Overspeed warnings. The final character is the production series/ year of manufacture.

Its probably a good idea to replace with a camera from the same model year if possible, all cameras are clearly dated on the label. Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Sorry, forgot to add, the L494 uses exactly the same cameras, so also a potential source.
Going rate on eBay is around £100, but I got mine under £50 when the seller suddenly halved the price and sent me an offer when it was in my “watch” list. Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Very interesting Gremlin, thanks for putting together the write-up for the mod.

What advantage does it bring? Just the Speed signage reporting on the dash? You mention coding in LKA.

LKA is activated as standard AFAIK on MY2017 Vogue models, not sure about other years, it may be present but not activated, hence to check the CCF settings for LKA and Steering type, to make sure the steering vibration/self steering for lane keep are available too. (Not sure if there is a 3rd even more basic camera without LKA, I mean what would the purpose of the cameras then be? Laughing )
The TSR activation setting in CCF can be selected in various modes, but I assume folks will want to activate all of them, i.e. TSR plus Overspeed Alert warnings with in-dash menu, and simply use the dash menu to select/deselect with a tick, rather than have to get out the GAP tool! Wink

If you don’t have the right hardware, you can still edit the CCF, and the in-dash menus may appear, but when you try to tick the selection boxes using the steering-wheel buttons, the tick will vanish almost immediately, this tells you that you have the wrong camera (IPMA) fitted.
