Hesitation when giving it some throttle

Hi guys got this really annoying issue finding it hard to diagnose not fault codes whatsoever car is very hesitant to change gear sometimes hanging onto 2nd to 3rd gear more of an issue when cold. All other gear changes are fine doesnt do this on manual gear changes on paddles completely fine. sometimes when giving it some throttle from standstill the car will set off then buck and hesitate then goes its an intermittent issue that's the annoying thing what I have noticed there is no issue when driving slow through gear changes and slight throttle no bucking or hesitation. Any ideas as I have hit a brick wall can't be MAF or MAP sensors surely as this would still happen when im using the paddles to change gear when flooring it but its fine no bucking or hesitation. I had a fluid change done 6 months ago with TC oil done also and I recently had TC case done again and dropped another 2 litres out of transmission as we only managed to get out 4.5 litres out on initial changes so the plan was to drop out 2 litres again few months laster and then again so in theory we have then managed to do a complete change. Any ideas guys much appreciated. Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 SDV8 SVO Stying Pack

A few thoughts:

Did this occur immediately after Gearbox fluid change, or was it fine for a while?

Clearing gearbox adaptions might help.

ZF boxes have a mode which keep revs up if they're running too hot, but that goes against you saying it's worse when cold. Generally happens if fluid level too low or gearbox oil cooler is blocked.

Is the fluid level correct after being changed?

Hi Jon after the first initial change car running fine then only recently noticed the hesitation and bucking when pulling away giving it some throttle so had the 2 litres of oil changed but now seems to be hanging onto 2nd gear. The garage assured me only 2 litres came out as pan was left on etc.. so they put 2 litres back in so can't be under filled. Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 SDV8 SVO Stying Pack

My L322 is very similar mate and it seems a common issue as it's been nick named 'the suicide launch' as in it initally goes and then hesitates leaving you in harms way of other traffic.
Seems the general advice is to have it 'mapped' out.

Might be worth getting the gearbox adaptation reset. Generally required after an oil change anyway.

Sounds like the garage replaced like for like, so as you say should be right.

The way to check is that oil should just dribble from the filler hole (on the side) when the gearbox is at a certain temperature (and the oil has expanded a little due to heat). Can't remember exact temp off top of my head, but it's on 'tinternet / workshop manual.

Temp can be checked with a non contact infrared temp device for anyone who doesn't have diagnostic tools to give them gearbox oil temp.

I'm not even going to ask if they've used the correct grade of oil... ok, well I've just asked it.

One other thing, I'm assuming your issue is with the gearbox right, rather than the engine?

I will try another full gearbox oil change reset adaptions and then have the car remapped there is also a gearbox update available I have been told I have checked my eco with Iid tool and it says there is an update available so I will try this also. Its just really strange that its only holding onto gear 2nd to 3rd change all other gears changes are spot on smooth and it doesnt happen it paddle shift. Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 SDV8 SVO Stying Pack

Hi Jon yes gearbox oil was ordered from Maltings Direct 4x4 he assured me it was the correct oil. It must be gearbox issue and not engine as im getting no fault codes and the 2nd to 3rd gear change being hesitant but not occurring in any other gear change. One thing to add I have noticed the rev needle is never smooth on the 2nd to 3rd gear change it dances about abit a sounds like a riding the clutch noise you get in a manual. Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 SDV8 SVO Stying Pack

Is the MAP sensor clean? If the engine isn't responding as expected by the gearbox then gear changes will be affected.

Hi I will check the map sensor but surely if this dirty or faulty I would get a fault code and the paddle gear changes would also be affected hesitation etc but they are fine. Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 SDV8 SVO Stying Pack

No fault codes from a misreporting MAP sensor and manual changes take the decision away from the gearbox.

Ahh right ok I was just on the understanding that if it were an engine issue and not gearbox then the paddle shift would be hesitating bucking also if the MAP sensor was at fault I will check it to make sure thanks for info appreciate it. Also once car has warmed up no issues whatsoever with gear changes but the bucking and judder is still present when giving it some throttle when it drops a gear or two. Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 SDV8 SVO Stying Pack

Hi guys this problem was sorted after I had another transmission oil pan & filter change & TC oil changed one again the cars feels completely different no hesitation no bang on kickdown either so if anyone has same symptoms even if you have had a transmission oil & TC change done do it again but I went to a Land Rover Specialist this time so who’s knows!! Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 SDV8 SVO Stying Pack
